Hey all. I tried to run zypper up recently and hit on an error when trying to download ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64, as follows:
Failed to provide Package ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64 (Main Repository (OSS)). Do you want to retry retrieval?
[download.opensuse.org-oss|http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/] Can't provide file './x86_64/ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64.rpm' from repository 'download.opensuse.org-oss'
History:
- Downloaded data exceeded the expected filesize '636.2 KiB' of 'http://cdn.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/x86_64/ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64.rpm'.
- Can't provide ./x86_64/ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64.rpm
The other piece of advice I saw in that post from May was to switch to another mirror, but I donât know to what extent that advice applies when Iâm using the master download server?
If anyone has seen this or has an idea of how to fix it, I would much appreciate the help.
Lots of discussion there.
I uninstalled all ghc files to get update to proceed. After removing ghc files, I needed to lock them to get update of other files to proceed. Iâve decided to not reinstall ghc until needed. My original use for these is lost in the mists of time.
I tried zypper dup at first, saw the error, and fell back to zypper up in later attempts in case dup was doing something âextraâ that was the source of the issue. It wasnât, though. zypper up and zypper dup failed in the same way.
I ended up fixing this by uninstalling all ghc-* packages (which I had on my system because I use pandoc-cli), adding a lock to prevent reinstallation, and then running zypper dup.
Reinstalling pandoc-cli is now impossible (removing the lock and trying fails with the same error on ghc-containers) which is⊠sad, but at least I can update my system generally.
I compiled haskell project âastroâ successfully using reinstalled ghc. Compiled into user directory; not system. Donât have web app part of the program working right yet but compilation using ghc went successfully. I think ghc when reinstallled works.
Bizarre! Itâs still failing for me after a sudo zypper refresh.

Other people are reporting success as well so it definitely seems to be a âmeâ problem of some kind. A sudo zypper clean and a retry doesnât fix things so itâs not anything to do with the other packages being in cache.
Maybe I just need to wait? It could be something somewhere is giving me stale data and it will flush itself out in a day or two.
Can't provide file './x86_64/ghc-containers-0.7-1.2.x86_64.rpm' from repository 'download.opensuse.org-oss'
seems significant. I donât have the repo named âdownload.opensuse.org-ossâ. Thev ghc-containers was downloaded on my machine from repo named âhttp://cdn.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/ossâ.
and then tried to run sudo zypper in ghc-containers. Iâm not seeing the download failure anymore, but only because Iâm told there is no provider of that package at all.
As the installation of openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed already disabled the old repos, you didnât need to manually disable additional ones. What you have done now, is disabling the repos which you added by the service package openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed
This wouldnât happen if you followed the commands which you were given by Sauerland. He used the URLs to remove, you used namesâŠ
