Strange, I updated everything and only had the four required repos enabled for 42.2. Ran:-
zypper ref && zypper dup
and went away to get on with something else. Came back and found the process has stalled almost as soon as it started, the last few lines being:-
Retrieving package texlive-arydshln-doc-2015.104.1.71svn15878-21.16.noarch
(60/4437), 530.4 KiB (623.7 KiB unpacked)

60 out of 4437 isn’t much progress. My question is, what should I do now? I don’t want to break the existing 42.1 installation which I am using for this message.

Whilst waiting for guidance and getting on with other work the system timed out and retried and now all is running again.

Some problem with the repo system I assume.
Nice it recovered before we all are trying our thinking power on this rotfl!
