Zotac GF8200-C-E Nvidia Driver Issues

Hi,

I’m having issues installing the nVidia driver for my Zotac GF8200-C-E motherboard (integrated GF8200). When I install from the nvidia repository (I think that’s what it’s called) X doesn’t work on the next boot. When I try to install the driver manually it wants the kernel sources, but after doing “zypper install kernel-source linux-kernel-headers” it says:

ERROR: The kernel header file
‘/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/build/include/linux/kernel.h’ does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source path
‘/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/build’ is incorrect. Please make sure
you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they
are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure
you have the ‘kernel-source’ or ‘kernel-devel’ RPM installed. If you
know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the
kernel source path with the ‘–kernel-source-path’ command line option.

zypper lr -d

Chances are your kernel and source versions do not match.
If your repos are ok, running

zypper up

should sort the issue

Hi,

I didn’t get a chance to try out your suggestions right away since I got sick the day after I submitted this. Your second command got the nvidia installer working - I almost can’t believe it was that simple. I was a little nervous after Zotac told me linux isn’t supported on that board. I’m assuming they meant they don’t do support for linux.

Now however I find that my sound doesn’t work (I’m assuming it wasn’t working before, but I hadn’t tried it). I know nothing at all about sound on linux and have no idea where to start. Any suggestions? I went to “Sound” under the Control Center and tested every device, but none of them output sound on my speakers (they’re plugged into the correct port, I had them working on my previous distro)

Ideally you start a new thread with Sound in the title. Here is the troubleshooter: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

Not that anybody cares, but I thought I would post here for posterity. I got the driver installed, but it would freeze up whenever rendering something. Regular desktop use was fine, however any 3D rendering froze the system. Zotac doesn’t support linux so to get them to recognize the problem I had to purchase a copy of Windows to troubleshoot. Lots of graphics problems occured in Windows (not quite the same though) so I’m assuming it’s a hardware issue. Zotac really loves to drag their feet on support issues it seems so I’m STILL awaiting RMA.
