Zattoo on OpenSuSE 11.0 - no sound with PulseAudio

I’m trying to look and listen to the Zattoo Internet TV, but up to now there is no sound possible.

I am running Zattoo 3.3.1 with (originally) flash-player 9.
Displaying is working ok, with the hints found on the zattoo -website and google about linking the curl library etc.

Sound should work via libflashsupport and the PulseAudio Server, which exists in the normal 11.0 installation - but it does not.

Sound does work in principal, i can listen to youtube or other music via flash-player and libflashsupport using PulseAudio. Sound stops when either stopping the pulseaudio-Deamon or removing the libflashsupport-File - i therefore conclude that the soundserver is working as designed.

Only Application without Sound is Zattoo.
Only Error-Message found in ~/.Zattoo/Data/logs/zattoo.debuglog:
“ERROR: Could not apply hw params to PCM device”

I tried the following without success:

  1. Using different libflashsupport Libraries from SuSe Repositores (11.1’er Versions and other): Only effect: With some newer libraries flash makes some click-noises when starting, i.e. by using Youtube in Firefox.
I think this can not be the problem, since Firefox uses the Library correctly.
  2. Using different parameters in the pulseaudio-Config /etc/pulse/daemon.pa , as found on the pulseaudio-website. These changes had no positive effect.
  3. Using “hard” bindings for pulseaudio-Devices in den /etc/pulse/default.pa. Worked for the other applications, but not for zattoo.
  4. Installing flash-player 10: Did this by using an rpm from Repository-Source, flash 10 works ok, but still no sound in zattoo.

Any Ideas what to try next?

Just a wild guess here: my knowledge of Zattoo is non-existing. Could you try to convince Zattoo to use alsa or oss instead of pulse? Perhaps that cold make a difference.
Other than that I wouldn’t know.

Best of luck.

Hello, i tried to do what you suggest and this works:

First i have to say that i use the gnome desktop, probably pulseaudio is not used in KDE (??) and KDE Users do not have any problems.

Ok, i did this to disable pulseaudio:

  1. Renamed /etc/alsa-pulse.conf to /etc/alsa-pulse.conf.ORIG
  2. Stopped pulseaudio: pulseaudio --kill
  3. Restarted firefox and zattoo

The Effect: Sound works in both applications via native alsa soundserver.
Off course, the gnome desktop tools according to the soundserver does not work anymore, volume handler and the configuration in the control-center fail. To control the volume, i have to use alsamixer (or anything like that).

So we have at least a workaround, i can now stop pulseaudio and use the zattoo application.

If anyone has solved this with pulseaudio please let me know.
