yet another internet video thread

I am running OpenSUSE 11.0 with Gnome, 64-bit.

sam@linux-gra1:~> uname -a
Linux linux-gra1 2.6.25.9-0.2-default #1 SMP 2008-06-28 00:00:07 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have two separate problems.

PROBLEM #1: Flash only sort of works.

In Firefox 3.0.1, currently most Flash things don’t work. (I either get a logo linking to Adobe’s site to install the flash plugin, or else simply an empty gray box where what I want should be.) However, Flash 9.0.124 is installed, as is nspluginwrapper, according to about:plugins. Moreover libflashplayer.so seems to be installed:

sam@linux-gra1:~> nspluginwrapper -l
/usr/lib64/browser-plugins/npwrapper.nphelix.so
  Original plugin: /usr/lib/browser-plugins/nphelix.so
  Wrapper version string: 1.0.0
/usr/lib64/browser-plugins/npwrapper.nppdf.so
  Original plugin: /usr/lib/browser-plugins/nppdf.so
  Wrapper version string: 1.0.0
/usr/lib64/browser-plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
  Original plugin: /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so
  Wrapper version string: 1.0.0

Indeed, some Flash videos (that’s what I mostly care about, also the Flash application at the Bridgebase.com site) such as those on YouTube, Tudou, and most other embedded videos, used to work in Firefox. Even stranger, all these videos – plus the bridgebase.com app – currently work in Opera 9.50.2042. So I don’t understand what’s going on. M

Most likely the reason things broke under Firefox is that I’ve been messing around with it all afternoon… including an upgrade from 3.0 to 3.0.1. This was prompted because previously, and of course currently, under both Firefox and Opera, certain other Flash videos do not work. For example, the short videos on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Official Website | Current Events & Pop Culture News, Comedy & Fake News | Comedy Central and also the full episodes (e.g. The Daily Show Full Episode | Thursday Aug 14 2008 | Comedy Central). I do not understand how these differ from the other Flash videos I mentioned.

Let me know what information would be helpful for me to provide to those who might know how to approach this problem.

PROBLEM #2: Streaming multimedia content only sort of works.

I have the following Firefox plugins installed, according to about:plugins.

Helix DNA Plugin (RealPlayer Plugin Metafile) enabled for .rpm files
Totem 2.22.0 enabled for .ogg,.oga,.ogv,.wav,.mp3,.anx,.ana.,.anv,.mpeg,.mpe,.mpg,.flv,.nsv
VLC plugin, but it doesn’t seem to handle any particular suffixes
DivX Web player for .divx
QuickTime Plugin 7.2.0 for .mov, .mp4, .m4v

I rarely use most of these formats. The ones I actually encounter are .mov, .mpg, .wmv. The .mov’s play fine, so I think the QuickTime plugin is working OK. But .mpg’s, for example, lead to some sort of plugin running (presumably Totem) with audio but no video, plus a pop-up error “The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-1 Video decoder plugin which is not installed.” .wmv’s just give me a prompt suggesting I save the file, or open it with Totem (when I do so, it again gives audio but no video and the same error message, except asking for an “Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin”).

Can anyone suggest how I should change things so that everything “just works” the way it is supposed to?

For reference,

sam@linux-gra1:~> rpm -qa | grep xine
amarok-xine-1.4.9.1-27.1
libxine1-1.1.15-0.pm.1
xinetd-2.3.14-115.1
sam@linux-gra1:~> rpm -qa | grep codec
opensuse-codecs-installer-10.3.1-45.1
w32codec-all-20071007-0.pm.1
libavcodec51-0.4.9svn-20080818.pm.0
k3b-codecs-1.0.5-0.pm.5
sam@linux-gra1:~> rpm -qa | grep mplayer
(no output)
sam@linux-gra1:~> rpm -q MPlayer
MPlayer-1.0rc2-4.pm.8
sam@linux-gra1:~> rpm -q vlc
vlc-0.9.1-0.pm.2

Any help anyone can offer with either PROBLEM #1 or PROBLEM #2 would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

One update to PROBLEM #1:

a couple of hours later, without changing anything (or even restarting Firefox!) YouTube/embedded videos and some other Flash apps are now working in Firefox… the same ones that work in Opera.

However, the videos on thedailyshow.com still don’t work, prompting me to install Flash player – despite the fact that it is already installed. So this much of the problem persists.

Sam

In fact, it seems that going to the site (the Daily Show) with “bad” Flash on it crashed open Flash apps in other tabs, and now Flash is not working in Firefox. Hopefully this problem is just a temporary one, as the above experiments suggest
