YAST2 - package search on the web not working

Is the web package search within the YAST2 software installer broken. Whenever I try to search for a package using the ‘search on web’ option it comes up with “Search Failed. Remote server returned error code 404”. This is in a oS12.1 KDE installation.

Webpin? Yes, known issue for years.

Try this one: software.opensuse.org: Search Results

Thanks guys. Henk I was aware of the url, just sometimes it’s convenient to be able to do the search from within yast if I’m there installing other stuff too.

I’ll go look for the bug report and add my 2c worth.

I agree that it is frustrating that when you are inYaST, you do not get the working search URL. Must be easy to change by a developer though.

The developers are well aware of the problem, but nothing can be done
because it is a question of resources, human and machine, at the server
location. They hopped to solve it for 12.1, but it hasn’t happened.

I fully understand what you say, but an important thing is to unarm this then. I guess that not much resources are needed to simply remove the entry from the menu. Adding it later (if at all) can then take place when resources are available. A frustrated user is much easier a supporter lost then a user that hasn’t even seen the functionality.

Perhaps.

This was suggested in the factory mail list and rejected by the people
responsible, perhaps they overestimated the time needed to get those
resources - and don’t ask me, I don’t know for certain what it is they need
-. I think that they said that webpin was so successful that the server on
which it depend could not cope. Or perhaps it can’t cope because the OBS
was too successful, ie, too big.

I think Henk is right. I don’t see how completely removing the option
from the menu can possibly overload the server?

A more user-friendly option would be to leave the menu entry in place
but change its action to be simply popping up a dialog box that displays
the correct URL to use for a web search. (e.g.
<http://software.opensuse.org/121/en>) That just avoids a user going to
the forum and asking the same question as all the other users. (apart
from the ones who just give up in frustration).

No, making it work overloads the server.

The YaST module was not removed for 12.1 because they hoped to make it
work. Now it is too late, it can not be removed. You can not remove
software from the DVD once released.

That is not the correct url for webpin… it is a different service.

Or we are talking of a different thing. I’m talking about the webpin yast
module, or software search. There is also a “webpin” program. Also there is
a link on the server, that doesn’t work
(http://packages.opensuse-community.org/).

You may open a Bugzilla. Maybe it already exists and will be closed as
duplicate.

That makes sense but it isn’t what Henk suggested.

Right. I don’t believe anybody is suggesting that impossible things are
attempted. But spending slightly longer in ‘thinking and planning ahead’
next time might produce better results than rushing and doing.

> That is not the correct url for webpin… it is a different service.

Yes, I know it isn’t the same service but it is a URL that leads to a
service that does work and that achieves a very similar result for the user.

Then I don’t understand what he suggested.

We told them so in the factory list when there was time.

It can not be used for webpin, I do not know why.

Then I don’t understand what he suggested.

I suggested to remove the entry from the menu. Why should people have an entry that does not function? Only goal can be to make people fill silly/frustrated. Removing an entry can not consume that much resources imho.

We, stupid users, do not want to see a function that is not functioning. Especialy as it is not planned to make it functioning in due time (with an update the next few days). Remove the carrot to make not feel us like donkeys.

Make it invisible so we have not to answer again and again here that it is a dead end alley.

Then create a bugzilla… I’m tired of complaining about webpin. They don’t
listen to me anymore.

I hope you understand that I am not complaining about you. But you said there was lack of resources, which I can understand for the function itself. But which I do not value for the (temporary or not) removal.

Maybe I can find the Bugzilla and add my 2c.

Sorry, perhaps I did not explain myself clearly. I meant that I’m tired of
myself doing the same complains people are doing here, and getting nowhere.
I have been complaining about the broken webpin for years.

It was a very useful tool when it worked. :frowning:

No problem, that is as I understood from your post.
And yes, it is such neat thing to offer to the user. Your product is not in the repos you have? Then go down a few mm and click for a wider search. Bingo!.

Hello

First of all, I am new in Opensuse, and In my opinion is the most stable and well done linux distro, but:

I have the following problem: I can’t install new packages in opensuse, because the Yast2 does’t work, and, I can download the new packages from the download page, because appear the following mensage:

<metapackage xmlns:os=“http://opensuse.org/Standards/One_Click_Install” xmlns=“http://opensuse.org/Standards/One_Click_Install”>
<group> <repositories> <repository recommended=“true”>

Online updates for openSUSE 12.1

</repository> <repository recommended=“false”>

openSUSE 12.1

</repository> </repositories> <software>

Media Player for KDE

Amarok is a media player for all kinds of media. This includes MP3, OggVorbis, audio CDs, podcasts and streams. Play lists can be stored in.m3u or .pls files.

</software> </group></metapackage>

I hope that someone could help me with this problem.Best Regards

-=WELCOME=- new poster…

usually here in these openSUSE forums we prefer to have new problems
posted to new threads…i know that may be done differently in other
forms…but think about it: if you read all the way through this thread
and didn’t find an answer to YOUR problem, then this thread has no
bearing on your problem…so, start a new thread…it is so much simpler
for everyone…

yes, YaST does work…may thousands use it every day…

READ all of this reply before taking any steps–because maybe the last
line is all you need to do! (Amarok or something similar is already
installed)

YaST works, but the trick is you have to learn how to use it…that is
pretty well covered in the documentation (which you can read later,
maybe from here:
http://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/html/openSUSE/opensuse-startup/cha.y2.sw.html

but basically:
i look at the “message” you posted and see your are wanting to install
Amarok, so

  • hold down Alt and then press F2

  • a blank place to type will pop up near the top of the screen, in it
type yast and, press enter (there is an easier way to do this, but i
do not know what desktop environment you are using because you didn’t
tell us…nor did you tell us what operating system or version you are
using–please always tell at least those things, because we can not
    guess what you are using)

  • YaST Control Center will open, in it click on YaST Online Update in
the right column and it will show either you need to run in some updates
(just click the “Accept” button) or it will tell you there is nothing to
do, and you can close that window [this is not always needed, but you
didn’t tell if you have updated or not, so lets do that first!]

-then, still in the YaST Control Center, click on “Software Management”
in the right column…

  • a new YaST2 window will pop up with a Search tab selected and a blank
for you to type into… type amarok and press Enter

  • the right side of the YaST2 window will change and show amarok as an
installable package…right click on the empty box just to the left of
    amarok and select to “Install”

  • press the “Accept” button and wait while YaST does all the magic
needed to install, setup and add Amarok to your menu system…

NOTE 1: if the little box next to amarok is not empty and it has a check
mark in it, it is already installed…

NOTE 2: if you are wanting to add Amarok because you can’t play music
you already have installed then maybe you don’t actually need Amarok
because maybe you already have Kaffeine, MPlayer or any of several other
audio players installed but they won’t work because you have not yet
installed the codecs needed…in that case you just need to follow this
thread:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/multimedia/452884-multimedia-one-click.html

again, welcome…and, yes it will take a little patience and reading to
get going…ask when you need to…

I fail to see how this is related to this thread subject, ie, “YAST2 - package search on the
web not working”.

Please start your own new thread, and please post the command you issue with the results, using
