This has been asked before, but there was no answer, so I ask again.
Given yast2-dns-server has been removed from Tumbleweed, what is the best alternative to editing and maintaining records in the bind dns server?
Thank you.

Any editor?
( I remember managing bind
servers on HP-UX with, of course, just vi
).
The servers are set to read and write from openLDAP, not simple files. Yes, can edit openLDAP but that is a chore to work out now that the configuration tool is missing. Unless I am missing a trick.
Sorry, I may have completely misunderstood what the YaST module did. I never used it, but thought it was simply a GUI to edit the zone files. I have even no idea what openLDAP has to do with it.
Some years ago, YaST module was changed to save down the dns zone data and configuration in openLDAP. (same with DHCP, etc…). I went along with it to stay consistent. Now the configuration tool is gone and this means having to rip out the openLDAP configuration to return to simple files. Or reverse engineer the maintenance of the dns data in openLDAP.
Give the YaST module has been discontinued, would have been nice if there was a replacement - or a roadmap to managing the dns data in openLDAP. Poking around I find there is a script /usr/share/bind/ldapdump. Painful to have to spend time on this, but likely best answer is dump the data, reinstall bind and set up the zones in files that can be edited by hand as you suggest.
If anyone else knows better, please advise.
Pfff. I can understand your frustration.
