yast2 bootmanager issues

i am having issues with using SUSE 13.1 as the OS that manages grub, in yaST2 it says it has installed but when i try to boot i just get a blinking Xterm like cursor and the system doesn’t respond to input. i have never had this issue before when mint owned the bootloader, and i have never seen this with CentOS or arch either, which is why im at a loss. i have verified that the boot flag was moved to SUSE, SUSE is a primary partition, and the BIOS has sda as the boot device. here is the output of fdisk -l:

linux-832q:/home/nero # fdisk -l

there is nothing about the bootloader in /var/log/warn, so im lost.

Where did you install Grub to, MBR or root?

Try this, if you are using KDE.

Go to the KDE menu orb,

menu => System =>Terminal => Terminal - Super User Mode.

When asked, enter root pw

Then, do:

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

Next, do:

grub2-install /dev/sda

See if that works.

guess i left out something important, its DE is MATE, so give gnome terms please.

so it does find the OS’es

Installation finished. No error reported.

so i will try a reboot, but i takes me a while to get booted from the supergrub disk if GRUB is still broken.

it worked!
so, why did YaST2 blow up then?

It didn’t.

In some cases – I don’t recall which, at my age memory likes to play tricks – it creates the Grub, but doesn’t write it to the device first time out.

I believe it does so on redoing it, but – as I say – my memory …

At any rate, this was a shortcut to make sure it was performing both steps.

Oh.

… and welcome to the forums!

I hope you enjoy openSUSE as much as I do!

that actually makes sense.
its not trying to boot from that non-existing mint install anymore and now its reading SUSE’s install.
plus SUSE was a clone over from another drive too.
thanks for the help!

thanks, i got a bad taste in my mouth after an LTS of Debian had no sound caused by a bug that wasn’t caught and with what Ubuntu is doing (unity pulling 1gb memory) and CentOS is no longer supporting chrome, i needed something new and arch is nice and all, but still lacks support in a lot of aspects.

You are welcome. Enjoy.
