YaST updates very slow if VPN connected - both 12.3 and 13.1 KDE 32-bit

I was doing YaST online updates this morning on two different machines, one with openSUSE 12.3, one with 13.1, both KDE 32-bit. I usually run with a VPN connection, and get update transfer rates of around 1 MiB/s. Today during the “Refresh software repositories” step, transfer rates were around 1 KiB/s, down by a factor of 1024. When I disconnected VPN, rates went back to 1 MiB/s. VPN does not slow network traffic with browsers or e-mail, just YaST update. YaST did not show the entire repository URL (there was … in the middle), so I do not know exactly which repositories did what. All were really slow, but some seemed worse than others.

Has something changed in some of the repositories recently? Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,
Howard

Hi
There have been some reports on the openSUSE Mailing List about slow
repositories. I did a sync here earlier on and it was fine. It may be
the mirror your being directed to?

That appears to be the problem. The VPN server I usually connect to is in San Jose, California, although sometimes it gets redirected to Dallas, Texas. My ISP’s server is in San Francisco.

I changed two repositories to enabled and autorefreshed that usually are not, so YaST update would have something to do. I changed the VPN connection from California to the Netherlands, and started an update. The refresh step had speeds over 800 KiB/s. Looks like from the California VPN server, I get directed to a mirror that is functioning poorly.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Howard

I restarted zypper 3 times this morning because it was really slow. Third
time was the charm - ran like a scalded dog. I was updating 3 boxes. The
64-bit sessions ran about as usual but the 32-bit repos were all dead slow
until I restarted so it’s likely the repo you’re linked to, as you noted.
