Hi,
I just happened to install opensuse 11.2 on my pc. I am able to connect to the internet through firefox, but when trying to update the YAST, i keep getting this error message. http://i49.tinypic.com/np2gdi.jpg
It just wont connect to download the updates or install softwares.Feels kinda weird since i can connect thru the browser. Please help me out.
Not much of help, but I do have the same problem since yesterday at least. I havenāt tried to update for some days, so I donāt know for how long itās been like this.
Need to register for updates, in Yast/Software/Online Update Configuration. Click on the Advanced button, then on āRegister for support and get update repositoryā
Iāve had this problem with several versions of OpenSuse.
You do not need to register to use the OpenSuse. AFAIK the registration does not work anyhow, at least not here. You do need to if you use the commercial Novell version.
Iām sorry, Iām a noob with linux right now, and do not understand a lot of this gibberish, but i figure, I was getting the exact same error message while trying to update through Yast and it would ask me to abort/retry again.
@Konsultor : Thanks for your suggestion, but it would not even allow me to register. It again gives me the same error messages. Please check these screenshots :
It takes a while
Then try yast updates again. If it still fails do this:
zypper rr 7
zypper rr 5
This will remove the 2 non-oss repos you have, not sure why you have two.
Now try yast updates again. Does it still fail.
Now do this
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/non-oss/ non-oss
This is adding non-oss back, i want to see if it will do it.
If itās still not working. I think we may have to look at a DNS issue, where you have to change your network settings from DHCP and set the DNS info for your ISP.
Itās not a ārealā registrationāyou donāt enter a key or serial numberābut the process refreshes the list of repositories (and may send some info about your hardware to the developers).
As a matter of fact, I was able to add the repos, but thatās about as much it would allow me (as you will notice in the last screenshot). After adding the repos, it will again give me the same error message when trying to install the softwares.
Now do this in the terminal:
rpmdb --rebuilddb
It takes a while
Then try yast updates again. If it still fails do this:
zypper rr 7
zypper rr 5
This will remove the 2 non-oss repos you have, not sure why you have two.

After rebuilding db, i removed the 2 non-oss repos,as you suggested. Here are the screenshots : After rebuilddb :
Still got the same error while trying to update : http://i45.tinypic.com/2mfxcw1.jpg

I presume if its a network setting related issue, then it should not allow me to update anything. Not even the repos. But this error occurs only when trying to actually install the softwares from the links. :shame:
Thanks konsultor, gogalthorp, falolaf for your help.
And a special thanks to Caf4926 for going great lengths to help me out.
I do not know what went wrong with the first install, but it could have something to do with the additional repositories i had added. Iām not sure. But yeah, you guys know far better.
Thanks a bunch,Caf!! Thats exactly what i did after everything seemed fine with the repos and updates.
Thanks to your guide, i can finally listen to mp3s and watch my favorite movies on linux now. The "Switch system packages to packman versionsā threw up some conflicts, and I was a bit wary of proceeding further. But i took my chances, and clicked āaccept changesā. Finally, after a reboot, everything is working fine.
Cant tell you how pleased i am to finally have a perfectly tuned (and well behaved) ātux boxā. I have tried my hand at linux before this, but would always run into issues with internet settings or multimedia. And for a beginner like me,its hard to find a way out once it gets messed up.
I may finally bid goodbye to Windows 7 and become a linux convert. All thanks to you!! Your forum has been the most helpful of all, and Iām definitely going to stick around and learn more.
Words cannot express my gratitude. Keep up the great work!!
Sweet looking desktop Karen.
Iām really pleased you managed to figure it out.
Try and manage with just the repos suggested in the multi-media guide, at least until you really get to grips with everything.
Here is another tip. You know already that multi-media should be supplied by Packman. For Eg; k3b
k3b is also available in the oss repo.
Using Software Management, and with the āViewā filter by Repository
See how you can use the Version tab and check the installed version and use the radio button to toggle to what you need if necessary. http://thumbnails25.imagebam.com/7687/92d33176863191.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/92d33176863191)
