New SUSE user here, having just migrated over from Kubuntu. The installation went fine but I’m not running into problems with setting up YOU to run through the university proxy.
I’ve setup the proxy module in the YaST control panel to direct to the proxy file (http:wwwcache.gla.ac.uk/glasgow.pac:8080) but when I try to test it I’m getting an error of malformed url resulting in an inability to resolve the proxy. I know the url is correct though as it works fine in both Konqueror and Firefox. Changing the url to an IP format had not effect either.
Anybody have any suggestions of how to solve this?

Not easily, since this is considered a per system setting. You could try using the profile manager (SUMF) and copy config files hence and forth.
I see where it makes sense, e.g. on my laptop which I use in a corporate network and elsewhere. What do you need a per user setting for? Consider filing an enhancement request on bugzilla.novell.com.
I need it for the same reason you do. I think this is a pretty common need. At home, I have only suse computers. At school, they are a Microsoft shop. Getting connected there is bewildering. If I ever get it to work, I would like to leave it alone. But then my laptop won’t work at home. :\

Technically you need it only for system updates. KDE4 has its own proxy configuration, so has Firefox.
Again, I’d file a bug report and ask for an enhancement.
Up until kde4, I was able to set up the proxy in Firefox and, when at home, uncheck “use proxy.” Annoying, but only a couple of clicks.
I’m beyond that now. I’m unable to get the proxy to prompt me for user and password. One thing I have never done before is change proxy settings in yast. When I am in school, I’ll try that. I’m not resisting your bug suggestion. I just don’t understand the process well enough to do it.

Again, the Yast proxy setting is for the system. If you don’t need to update your system while behind the proxy, just don’t do it.
Hi!
I’ve just install openSUSE 11.1.
I’m unsuccesfully try to set global proxy as http://10.12.0.95/
Maybe, I use incorrect proxy address syntax?
I wrote this message from Firefox with manual proxy settings.
But I could cot install any packages from Internet
Thanks for any help.
An admin at school got me through the proxy. There were several problems, most of them PEBKAC. :shame:
However, what did get settled was not to set the proxy in yast but in Firefox. I have no reason to get on the network there, beyond web apps. So, I’m leaving yast alone.
