Trying to learn Linux, and it’s not helping that Yast’s Software Management keeps crashing (window opens, runs some kind of check, and closes before completing).
-My home folder seems intact, but this YAST SM thing is pretty annoying. This is a clean system. Why is this happening?
-I have been taught a command line to get SM to work, but it doesn’t inspire confidence as the window looks different from other YAST areas: xdg-su -c ‘/sbin/yast2 sw_single’
-YAST Online Update also runs a check and the window closes immediately. Don’t know if this is related.
Any help most appreciated.

Okay, so tell me if I should file a bug report (I will need directions on how to do so).
I had a hunch that it was something in the windows manager, and as I’m running a dual display, I thought of dragging YAST to the primary display. Software Manager indeed opens, and can be dragged to the other monitor. But if the YAST window is in the second screen (the one to the right in my setup), Software Manager will not stay open.
I’m also not sure why I can’t edit the original post to put new information at the top, or mark it solved, etc. I don’t know how many views didn’t make it to second comment (or this one)…
You can not edit your posts (after about 5 minutes to allow you to correct typos). It would be a bit confusing when you would edit a post after answers are already there. Thus, when new and/or additional informatio is to be added, add a new post to the thread.
You can also not marked a thread “Solved” in a special place, but you can add a post that your problem is solved, and we prefer it when you then tell us what you did, this for others that find the thread having the same problem. Also the thread is not closed because, even if you are satisfied with a solution, others may still want to add information for the benefit of all.
Also, you started the thread not even 24 hours ago. Remember that your fellow users are living all over the globe and sometime need sleep or go working. etc. Juts be patient.
It also could be that you did not provide some basic information and not everybody is in the mood to always ask again for it. Like: what desktop environment (KDE. Gnome, …) are you using?
You seem to think that there is some bug (to be reported), but I would say that when YaST breaks every time on every user, there would be a lot of threads about that here in the forums. I see none. Did you? When you seem to be the only one that has this problem, I assume that further analysis about what is so particular with your installation should be done first before even a bug report can be formulated.
And about your repositories list, it is a bit strange. Normally after an installation you will have active repos for OSS, non-OSS, Update and Update-non-Oss. You will then also have disabled repos for Source and Debug. But you, not having the Update repos, will not be able to update/patch your Leap 42.2 installation to the present status.
I also do not understand why you try a zypper dup. That is (as the output says) to do a distribution update, something you probably did to update your distribution from 42.1 to 42.2. But that is not to be repeated (and in this case rather useless).
So;
add the Update repos;
do a zypper patch (or zypper up);
try to re-create you problem;
when YaST still crashes when you open Software Management, report as specific as possible what it did (remember that nobody here has the same phenomenon, thus we need as many details a possible);
Actually it should have been fixed already I think, but I’m not sure if the fix made it into 42.2 (or if it works reliable).
The main problem here is that it’s not really that easy to reproduce. AFAIK it doesn’t happen everywhere, even if there are two/multiple displays (with a single monitor it should not happen at all).
IIRC, a workaround was to uninstall yast2-qt-branding-openSUSE, but I’m not sure that helped everybody who had the problem.
I don’t understand. Could you have a look at the link / webpage in my original post? I was not under the impression I needed anything more than ‘openSUSE-Leap-42.2-Update,’ which I have. 42.2 seems to be working without problems (yes I am using Plasma / KDE).
Sorry, you have OSS and Update OSS. That is correct.
You do not have non-OSS (and it’s Update). That is not a problem when you do not want to use any of the products there.
But as said, the list is a bit short. Not what is normal after a fresh installation. But Debug and Source are only in the list for the case when needed.
I’m learning Linux and haven’t yet learned how to install software. Like Chrome, for example. The YAST package / software manager could be, imho, much clearer to noobs…
Okay, now Software Manager won’t stay open even in the primary monitor (and the window is closing even when I use xdg-su -c ‘/sbin/yast2 sw_single’ to open it). This is frustrating to say the least.
Could I have a link to someone who might be able to help?

I can’t install simple programs. My hands are shaking with rage over the opaque process and terminology to just install a program. Yast does nothing to confirm or explain how to install anything. I am out for more days or weeks until I can summon the willpower to deal with a culture that seems to REVEL in making things opaque for those trying to learn.
Don’t know how it can be simpler go to Yast - Software management search for the package check it and hit accept. If the normal repos do not have the package then go to https://software.opensuse.org/search. If still not found ask here. In such a case you may need to compile from source which does require a little bit of knowledge but any here will be glad to help. It is never good to load up a bunch of repos just to have them less is more in this case.
If you are looking for advanced stuff like newer kernels or desk tops it is best to ask here for assistance before mixing packages from the advanced with the regular which is certain to break something that is just common sense. But there are simple procedures that allow this kind of thing. Just ask. Would mixing parts of Windows 10 with parts of Windows XP and you not not expect problems??? Linux gives you the power to shot your own foot. Does not mean you have to aim for it.
Okay, I will explain what specific program I am trying to install.
Perhaps you can give me instructions in english on how to do so, (while NOT assuming that I am already familiar with hundreds of terminal commands and have used all them on multiple successful attempts).
What I’d like explained is why, either on the webpage with the script or in the graphical YAST interface, there aren’t simple instructions on how to load packages / scripts or whatever the hell it is I need to get the software installed. The process is as opaque as trying to get on an IRC channel, ostensibly there to help new users, and having the channel tell you that you cannot log in without an invitation.
So I go to the ‘alien’ script/package/dependency/who-knows-what-the-hell-it-is page openSUSE Software which has zero instructions, just bad links that return you to the same page, and I go to YAST to try to install it.
I open the Software Repositories window, but nothing I do seems to have any effect. Neither the ‘Specify URL’ nor the ‘HTTPS’ options seem to work when I input the web page location and type ‘alien’ into the ‘name’ field.
The Software Management window comes up with nothing that seems relevant while searching for ‘alien.’ And has no obvious way to add a script or whatever the hell the ‘alien’ thing is.
And I can’t proceed, and I can’t believe it’s this hard to do.
Just run it from the primary for the moment. Apparently it is broken on multiple monitors at the moment. You can force a reinstall either in Yast or via zypper but I doubt that it will help. Note Wolfi’s post above. Also there are 3 user repos listed I don’t know what is on them so DO NOT use zypper dup since you may load packages from them (6,7,8) only use zypper up. Be sure you are fully up to date since any fist will come from the standard repos
