Yast problems with openSUSE 11.0 (X86-64)

Hi!

I apologize if I chose the wrong forum for my question (I am a newbie here).

I relocated to a different university, and the OS they put on my computer is openSUSE 11.0. It is Intel Core Duo, if that matters.

Currently I have two problems with yast:

  1. When trying to install the latest version of the Evolution e-mail client plus the Evolution-Exchange plugin, yast complained that it could not access several repositories, such as:
    "
    Download failed:
    Download (curl) error for ‘http://www2.ati.com/suse/11.0/repodata/repomd.xml
    Error code: Connection failed
Error message: couldn’t connect to host
    "

I tried to skip, but similar errors came up with other repositories.

Eventually yast seemed to find a repository that works.
After searching for “evolution”, I found that evolution is in fact installed, and I found a not-yet-installed evolution-exchange plugin, which I then tried to install.

Again some errors, again some repository eventually worked.

However, when trying to set up Evolution, it seemed not to now “Exchange”.

  1. This is the current output of top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    20068 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m D 16 3.0 474:21.67 y2base
    21673 root 35 15 221m 59m 14m D 15 3.0 80:38.15 y2base
    23183 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m S 14 3.0 76:34.95 y2base
    646 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m R 13 3.0 71:24.43 y2base
    7276 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m R 13 3.0 455:40.99 y2base
    23184 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m D 12 3.0 74:05.52 y2base
    18169 root 35 15 224m 63m 15m R 12 3.2 455:20.13 y2base
    20067 root 35 15 221m 60m 14m R 11 3.0 483:56.88 y2base

In other words, there are many instances of y2base, I don’t know what they are doing, but it makes my machine useless for work.

How can I stop y2base?

Best regards,
Simon

Quit the updater applet in the systray.
Don’t let it start at boot.
Disable the ati repo for now - In Yast Software Repositories

re-boot and open yast software Management
search for the packages you want to install and check the box by the package name you want.
accept

Thank you for your quick answer!

I don’t know if I understand correctly. What I tried was:

  • Go to Applications -> System -> Configuration -> Install Software
  • open Yast
  • Disallow automatic update
  • Disable ati repo

Then I re-booted.
Afterwards I tried to open Yast again - but there was a message
"
Error
Download failed:
Download (curl) error for ‘http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss/suse/repodata/repomd.xml’:
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: couldn’t connect to host
"

Now I clicked OK

Next message:
"
Cannot access installation media
(Medium 1).
Check whether the server is accessible.
"

I chose “Skip”.

Next, an error message “Download failed”, but this time for ‘http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/content

=> OK and skip

Next download error for ‘http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/11.0/repodata/repomd.xml

And so on. After further download errors I got
"
Warning
There was an error in the repository initialization.
Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s)
History:

Again, I did “OK”, and Yast opens.

Trying to install evolution-exchange, I again got various download errors. After accepting the errors and skipping, it seemed to install.

But, alas, after starting Evolution, it still seemed to be impossible to connect with the Microsoft Exchange things that my university unfortunately chose to use.

I hope that the above description was detailed enough. What did I do wrong?

Best regards,
Simon

I said quit the updater applet in the systray in the panel.

Please can you post the result of this from a terminal:

zypper lr -d

This may also help
http://forums.opensuse.org/how-faq-read-only/unreviewed-how-faq/412555-disable-ipv6.html

I guess (being a non-native speaker) I did not understand the word “systray” (which in fact is in my dictionaries). But after a google search, I guess you refer to the green icon just beside the clock. I closed it now.

But then, I don’t understand how to not let it start at reboot (this is why I disabled automatic updates).

Result of zypper lr -d is:

Now, after quitting what I believe is the updater applet in the systray, I am now rebooting.

At first sight: disable debug repo, enable repo-oss.

When you click the updater and quit I thought it asked if you want it to start at boot, if not right click and configure it that way. It’s a PITA.

Make the changes I have shown in red.

It did not ask me, but right click and configure worked, thanks!

I then made the changes shown by you in red, and rebooted.

Surpizing (at least for me) that there are two new lines “Main Repository (NON-OSS)” and “Main Repository (OSS)”.

But I am afraid it still does not work. If I start YaST2 (clicking on “Install Software” and providing the root password), I get “Download failed” for ‘http://download.epensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss/suse/repodata/repomd.xml’, and about 7 similar download errors.

A non-educated guess: Can it be that the computer services here at the university in Galway/Ireland block the connection to the repositories (perhaps by some firewall settings)?

Best regards,
Simon

You did not notice I had removed repo 4 and 5. Check again:
And you missed the Updates repo priority to 20

@S_King

It seems to me that you are behind a http proxy. If so, you have to configure it. Using YAST, for instance. Also, I think you will have to logoff and logon for changes to take effect.

Check with your local network person(s) at university for proxy settings.

HTH

Milan

A possibility worth looking in to. But your repo’s still needed sorting!

Thank you! I missed the “20”, and looking for red things I was not looking for deleted lines. You see: Invisible things aren’t red

But I am afraid that YaST2 still doesn’t work.

Simon

Hi Milan,

so, this would confirm my uneducated guess.

I’ll try to figure out how to change it with YAST. As for the local network person(s): They are not very responsive in Galway.
It took

  • several days to get an e-mail address and a WiFi access,
  • several days to get permission to connect my notebook with the computer in my office by ssh,
  • several days to re-establish access to the internet after moving the computer to a different office (but so far without ssh access from outside),

and even after three weeks I have no decent mail client running. I am stuck with Microsoft Outlook Web Access, and it is a pain in the neck.

Before asking in the forum, I asked the computer service people here, but didn’t get any reply so far.

Sorry, I guess this rant was off-topic. But it is the reason why I try to get help from outside the university.

Kind regards,
Simon

Hi Milan,

by the way, I did not only logoff/logon but I rebooted.

Sorry for my lack of general knowledge, but I am not sure whether being behind a http proxy is the same as having a firewall.

My attempts were:

  1. In the YaST Control Centre, I went to Network Services; after clicking at “Proxy”, the proxy configuration was shown, and according to it a Proxy is not enabled. Should it?
  2. In the YaST Control Centre, I went to Security and Users, and clicked at “Firewall”. The Firewall is automatically starting, uses Dell Ethernet Controller eth0 configured in external zone, and no services are allowed in both external and demilitarized zone.

Would this explain why software update/installation does not work?

Best regards,
Simon

The openSUSE firewall should just be left alone unless you need to enable a specific service like ssh.

Do you have the install dvd?
You know much of what you might want is on that. Or you could even download it if it comes to that.
You need to disable all online repos and just leave the dvd enabled.

But in your opening post, you imply teh computer is provided for you?! If so I would make some enquiry about the matter.

Hi!

No, I don’t have the install dvd. The computer was just given to me as is, taken from another office.

There is already a ticket from our “computer services” for my problem (originally a problem with configuring Evolution), and I now pointed out that I got the hint from openSUSE forum that the proxy settings might be the problem.

Hopefully they will give me an answer in not more than a few weeks…

Thank you!
Simon

*Hopefully they will give me an answer in not more than a few weeks…
*
That long! Blumin heck.

I hope that I am exaggerating. But I was not exaggerating when I said that it took several days to re-establish internet connection after moving my computer to another office, that ssh access to my computer from outside is not re-established one week after moving, and that I am still not provided with an acceptable e-mail client (hence, not Microsoft Outlook Web Access) after three weeks. Although I asked, and although I would be willing to build things (say, Evolution) from source, which failed due to missing development tools that, again, I could not get with YaST.

“Not more than a few weeks” is just an extrapolation.
So, not all people are as responsive as you, and I appreciate that you are!

Cheers,
Simon

Opera web browser has a built in email amongst other things.
You can download the .rpm and just install it with

rpm -ihv *package_name

I’m using the beta opera and it’s great FYI

Thank you for your hint. But it seems it is a never ending story.

First attempt: I went to the opera download page, and while downloading I was asked whether I wish to open it with the installer. I did. Afterwards I could launch Opera, but it did not have an internet connection.

Then, I uninstalled it (rpm -e opera, if I am not mistaken) and install it by the rpm command you gave me. It said:

gauss:/home/king/bin # rpm -ihv opera-9.64.gcc4-shared-qt3.x86_64.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:opera ########################################### [100%]
Could not parse file '/usr/share/applications/amdccclesu.desktop': Key file does not have group 'Desktop Entry'

But at least I have Opera running, and I guess to establish the internet connection I have to setup (and not upset…) the proxy.

Best regards,
Simon
