Hello !
It is a new Tumbleweed installation, using the KDE desktop.
When starting YaST (as simple user) from the application menu : i can see in taskbar YaST for a short time , but the actual window does not appear.
When I open konsole and type yast / yast2 : it says that “running it may require superuser priviledges”.
When I login as root : the YaST works in text mode.
What might be the cause why it doesn’t start as graphical application? Where can I investigate the problem ?
My expectation is that a normal user is supposed to be able to start the graphical YaST (which would ask for the root password).
Did you do manual package selection/deselection whilst installation? Did you choose to not install recommended packages? Did you verify the ISO checksum? Which installation ISO did you choose for installation? Did you use tools like Ventoy? Did you already perform a zypper dup and zypper inr?
I have used the ‘network image’ iso. I have verified the checksum. For booting the iso I have used a Ventoy usb.
During the installation indeed I have done some package customization. For example added git, mc, tmux, 32-bit support. I have deselected for example mariadb. But I have not written down what exactly have I done.
Do not use Ventoy as it alters the boot parameters and installation media which effectively leads to a broken system . See From kernel panic to segmentation fault
If you can‘t remember what packages you added or removed, it is possible that you removed vital packages. Better do a default installation and add or remove packages starting from a working system. In this case you always have a working snapshot to roll back and start from.
