YAST not visible after the authorization prompt

after doing a ZYPPER DUP on Sunday, when I attempt to start YAST i notice these two processes running but YAST is not visible on the desktop

y2controlcenter and yast2

any idea what i should be looking at to help determine what the issue is ?

Thanks

any help on this would be appreciated.

thanks

It’s hard to help with no information.

For example, you do not say which desktop you are using.

I have run into occasions where an application was running, but I could not find any window for it. At the time, I was running KDE, and it turned out that the window was in a different activity. If you are using KDE, did you try switching activities and then looking around?

I am running KDE in a VirtualBox machine. I’m not sure about switching activities. I did check both desktops and did not see YAST running in either of them.

Configure Desktop –> Workspace Behavior –> Virtual Desktops

I have “different widgets for each desktop” unchecked.

I’m also running Tumbleweed with KDE on a dual boot setup and I’m not having this issue there.

Hold down the “Windows” key and click TAB. That cycles you to the next activity. Or use the activities manager (three dots near left of the panel).

And/or try to deactivate the option “Only show tasks of the current activity” in the taskmanager’s settings (right-click on the task manager/window switcher to reach them).
I have seen it some time ago (after experimenting a bit) that a window was not associated to any activity and therefore not shown or reachable at all.
Deactivating that option should make the window show up in any case.

If that doesn’t help, you probably have some different problem that causes YaST to freeze before it even shows a window.

I tried that and it did not work. However i did find some information in the /var/log/yast2/y2log file as follows. The entries at the bottom of the log seem to indicate a problem

Do you have libQt5Gui5 installed?

Try to reinstall it:

sudo zypper in -f libQt5Gui5

Hi Wolfi,

it appears that i did have libQt5Gui already installed, but i went ahead and reinstalled it anyway. I now seem to have the same issue with Firefox not being visible. I’m wondering if I might be better off attempting to create another virtual machine with the current tumbleweed iso and seeing it yast and firefox are working there.

Right, it should be install as it is required by YaST Qt on a package level.

So nothing changed regarding YaST apparently.

I note that the error in the log talks about not being able to open /libQtGui5.so, but libQtGui5.so is in /usr/lib(64) of course.
Do you maybe have some (broken) libQtGui5.so in /, maybe a dangling symlink?

ls -l /

I now seem to have the same issue with Firefox not being visible.

Firefox too?
Then there’s definitely some bigger problem on your system.

Maybe check whether your system partition is full, this can cause all sorts of strange problems.
Try to delete some snapshots, they might fill up the partition although free space is still shown.

I’m wondering if I might be better off attempting to create another virtual machine with the current tumbleweed iso and seeing it yast and firefox are working there.

Would be a possibility, yes.
But I don’t think that Tumbleweed is broken. It works fine here (including YaST and Firefox) in VirtualBox, although that installation is not fully up-to-date at the moment…

Maybe just try a new user account first, that should at least rule out user configuration issues.

Probably nothing to do with your problem but I had invisible
applications a few months ago after a KDE4 update. Fixed it by
renaming .kde4 so that a new one was created. Sledgehammers and nuts
spring to mind but it’s a fix I’ve become quite used to with KDE.

I created a new virtual machine in Virtualbox 4.3.26 using this ISO file

openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-i586-Snapshot20150413-Media.iso

it has the same problem of not visible Yast / Firefox.

I’ll try with the 64 bit iso later tonight.

Hm. I fully updated my Tumbleweed VM (which is also 32bit btw) meanwhile and still don’t see any issue with either YaST nor Firefox.
I haven’t tried a fresh installation myself, but the ISO basically just contains the packages from the repo, I don’t think there is a problem with it.

As you see the same on a fresh installation, it’s probably not an installation issue either.

Do you maybe have 3D support enabled in VirtualBox?
Try to disable it. I remember another recent thread where someone had problems with it (I can’t find it now).
And somebody had different problems with GNOME when enabling 3D support for the VM:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/506703-VirtualBox-3D-acceleration-amp-GNOME-icons-are-not-shown?highlight=virtualbox

YaST is based on Qt5 now which uses OpenGL for certain things. If there’s an issue with OpenGL support, it might break YaST therefore.
And Firefox might have problems with broken OpenGL support too.
Running Tumbleweed in a VM without 3D support (I never got it to work on my hardware at all anyway) works fine here, using the Mesa software renderer for OpenGL.

After disabling 3D acceleration on the display in Virtualbox the problem is resolved. So then it would appear that this is an issue in Virtualbox perhaps.

Well, sorry for not thinking about that earlier…

So then it would appear that this is an issue in Virtualbox perhaps.

Maybe, 3D support is still labelled as “experimental” in the manual.
It could also be an issue in Mesa though.
That said, I don’t even know which driver is being used when 3D support is enabled for a guest. As mentioned, I never got it to work at all here.
Maybe I should try again one of these days…

I have a similar problem with KDE on Tumbleweed.

The yast GUI does not show (tasbar has an entry showing up briefly, and it closes before I can see any GUI showing up) when kdesu uses sudo for the authorization.

When I uses su for kdesu it runs without problems.

Reproducibility: always

Well, then you obviously don’t have a similar problem at all, but rather a completely different one.

I would suggest to try:

  • run “xauth -b” and then enter ‘q’, maybe .Xauthority is locked for some reason
  • kill “kdesud” (with “killall kdesud” e.g.)
  • run “kdesu yast2” in a terminal window to see if you get any error messages

And what do you mean with “when kdesu uses sudo for the authorization”? Did you change kdesu’s config to use sudo instead of the default su?
Delete the config file (~/.kde4/share/config/kdesurc) as a test then.

I believe that there’s a bug in VirtualBox 4 series. This problem does not exist in VmWare Workstation 10 or 11.
You can always download the free VmWare Player.

VirtualBox 5.0 Beta is available for download for anyone to try out. Hopefully this will be resolved in the newer version.

Maybe, but I remember other threads about problems with VMWare’s 3D support, especially in combination with GNOME…

Anyway, Thieh’s problem does seem to have a completely different reason, as I mentioned. He writes that YaST works with su, but not with sudo.
So it’s rather kdesu not working when configured to use sudo apparently.
Definitely no VirtualBox problem in this case I’d say, otherwise it would not work at all.

@Thieh, in addition to what I wrote already: does sudo itself work? I.e. try to call “sudo ls” or something like that.
