YaST is unable to connect to repository server [openSUSE 13.2]

Hi, I’m using openSUSE 13.2 KDE 64-bit from yesterday’s official released ISO.

First, I used openSUSE 13.1 berofre, and this time I made a format on the current suse’s partition (ext4) and leave all the default choices to YaST.

The installation went fine, but I can’t load the community repositories list during the installation. Maybe it’s okay to add later.

But it’s not only happens only on the liveUSB, after booting to suse, YaST can’t seem to be able to connect to any repositories on the list.

Wired connection, no proxy or stuffs.

Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/non-oss/content':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Failed to connect to download.opensuse.org port 80: Network is unreachable

Abort, retry, ignore? [a/r/i/? shows all options] (a):

All links worked fine in web browser (firefox).

Here’s my repositories list:

2 | repo-debug | openSUSE-13.2-Debug | No | Yes

And in YaST2: http://i.imgur.com/dCk2RDE.png

I was searching on the internet for solutions for 2 days, but none of them works for me.

Here’s what I did:

  • Change DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4, 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220, 199.85.126.10 / 199.85.127.10 (restarted the computer everytime i made the change)

  • Change the network service to NetworkManager service, and disable the IPv6. (restarted computer).

  • Disabled firewall. (restarted computer)

But none of them worked for me, YaST still can’t connect to the server repositories, can’t download any packages.

And also, the 1-click installation from software.opensuse.org doesn’t work for me (It can’t connect to the server).

The 4.4 GB installation media ISO file doesn’t seems to have the packages I need, even for multimedia codecs.

Any help please?

On the same computer? then forget normal network settings. DNS, etc…
no. Look at the proxy configs.

Are you able to reach the internet with your browser?
From terminal are you able to ping a web site, i.e.:

sparkz: ping [www.google.com](http://www.google.com)

Are you able to ping your router?
Are you setting up as DHCP or static IP
Did you use the Network iso or DVD iso for your install? If you used the Network and the installation went well, that was done via DHCP (I’ve never installed via DVD iso, so I don’t know how much, if any, it relies on network, though I would imagine, if it does, it does so with DHCP also)

Sorry but I don’t use any proxy.

Yes, everything works file, except yast and zypper with the repositories.

I used the 4.4GB media DVD ISO to intsall. I tried both DHCP and static IP but they didn’t solve it.

And the result on the liveDVD kde iso is the same, can’t refresh or install anything though the network works fine on the web browser.

My ping result:

In short, are they all pointing to ‘13.2’ and not ‘13.1’ or some other version and pointing to these addresses? (btw, probably don’t need the three ‘Debug’ repos)

Here’s mine.

Though everything were fine when i was still using opensuse 13.1. Just after the clean installation of 13.2, everything seems weird.

Edit: A quick look at your output seems to show you may have to much info in the URL, for instance you have:

Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/oss/content'

compared to my:

 http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/oss/

Perhaps that’s the problem?

Seems not. Compare to repo list, it’s just trying to download the content list from the current repo.

I don’t know which type of connection it used to connect to the repo, cuz the links worked fine on all browsers.

It is a head-scratcher, though it seems zipper was able to refresh the two main repos. What if we try a small program (which is fun to have  ):

zypper in fortune

I even forced my firefox setting to use IPv6 only, and it still work, but zypper and yast doesn’t.

Btw, I found something. The problem is from the cURL that zypper tried to use to download.

eruna@LunarCapital:~> curl http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/non-oss/content
curl: (7) Failed to connect to download.opensuse.org port 80: Network is unreachable

I used the same link with wget.

eruna@LunarCapital:~> wget http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/non-oss/content

Any way to configure cURL, or change the way zypper/yast used to download repo list from curl to wget or axel?

Sorry, IchinomiyaEruna, that is way above my pay grade. Perhaps a more knowledgeable person can help with that.

Just to let you know, I solved the problem.

The problem was from the cURL, yes.

cURL was trying to use IPv6 to connect to the repo host, resulted as unreachable network.

Disabling IPv6 setting from network manager doesn’t stop cURL from using it, neither adding --ipv4 to /root/.curlrc

After searching around for an hour, I found a way to force cURL back to use IPv4 setting:

edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file with root and add these following lines:

 net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

also edit the** /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6** file and change the value from 0 to 1

It worked right after that, no need to restart the system or network connection.

eruna@LunarCapital:~> sudo zypper ref
root's password:
Repository 'openSUSE 13.2-0' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-13.2-Non-Oss' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-13.2-Oss' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-13.2-Update' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-13.2-Update-Non-Oss' is up to date.
All repositories have been refreshed.

This post is for anyone who had the same problem with me.

And thanks for reply.

Excellent news. Glad you got it working. Just finished doing a little surfing myself and all the info seemed to point at the IPv6 being the culprit. I don’t use NetworkManager, however in YaST > Network Settings > Global Options, under IPv6 Protocol Settings, I do have the Enable IPv6 unchecked. I wonder if this has the same effect as your solution? Again, congrats

Have a look at /etc/zypp/zypp.conf. I don’t have a 13.2 to check it
myself, there may be some setting there (recently I found one that I
wanted, for which I was using .curlrc previously:
download.max_download_speed)

Yes, disabling it systemwide.

Yes, I had the same problem, applied your solution and it worked! THANKS!

Thank you IchinomiyaEruna!

I have been trying to find a solution to this for the last few days.

The changes that you suggested got me updating again!

I followed IchinomiyaEruna and it worked. But now this issues came back.I still get the curl error

Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/repo/non-oss/content':Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Failed to connect to download.opensuse.org port 80: Network is unreachable

Anyone can help?

(Sorry, I use the Google Translator :P)

The same thing happened to me. I resolved as follows:

Yast > Network Settings > Global Options

  • Change the first option “NetworkManager” to “Wicked”
  • Uncheck the option “enable IPv6”

On the Resume tab, select your ethernet controller and click in Edit

  • On Address tab, select “Just DHCP v4” and click “OK” for return.

On the Routing tab, select just “Enable forwarding IPv4”.

Restart the Networt Manager or the System.

End. Now everything is working fine here ^^
