Hello,
my system will only start and run in terminal mode. This is due to “finger-trouble” (?) when trying to install the gcc fortran compiler. I have no access to the net, but seem to be connected. Also, when trying to initialize Online Update in yast, I cannot access opensuse.org (“connection failed”). kdeinit aborts with “cannot connect to X server :0.0”. The machine is a standalone HP Pavillion connected to the outside world via a wireless network
Anybody having a good suggestion re how to proceed?
Best regards and thanks,
J C Anker

Hi,
First thing first, let’s solved the GUI problem. It seems you don’t have access to your graphical desktop. Wich graphic card do you have ?
Follow these instructions to troubleshoot : SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
And give us feedback.
Hello,
zypper does not work since I have no access to the net.
"Error code:Connection failed
Error message: Couln’t resolve host ‘download.opensuse.org ’ "
I think the main problem is the lacking access to the net.
Thanks, more suggestions are much appreciated

Hi,
Can you access the gui desktop or not ?
Can you post the result of this command :
/sbin/lspci -nnk
Have a look here too : Getting Your Wireless to Work
Hello again,
the graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400.
Is this why I can not acces the internet in terminal mode?
Best regars,
J C Anker
BTW:
When I start OpenSuSE, I get the SuSE Cameleon logo with background OK.
I gather the graphics card is working OK. Sorry for not mentioning this
earlier!

Can you post the result of the command I gave you ?
I am trying to figure out how to connect to my Linux Laptop or to mount an USB memory stick.
Will forward the info when I have managed.

Did you installed the driver for your wireless card ? if not, since the Atheros driver is not included in the kernel, you’ll have to do it via ndiswrapper. Consult this : SDB:Ndiswrapper - openSUSE

No.
But you posted several problems, and we have to start with one.

Hello DaaX,
the driver for my wireless card ('ath9k) is installed. Ping to 127.0.0.1 works, to 192.186.0.1 does not.
Best Regards,
J C Anker
127.0.0.1 is the loop back interface. It is not connected to any hardware and doesn’t use any driver. Are you sure the other IP is 192.186.0.1 and not 192.168.0.1 ? If it’s an internal IP it has to start with 192.168 (for a class C lan). It may or may not be assigned to a network device. You’ll find out with
ifconfig -a
Hello Omniscient,
sorry, it should have been 192.168.0.1
ifconfig -a lists eth0,lo, pan0, and wlan0.
More interesting (?):
‘wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf&’
does not recognize
'network={
ssid=“my_essid”
…
}
but accepts the lines before
ctrl_interface= …
etc
Best Regards,
J C Anker

Hi,
It looks like you are not connected to any SSID. In the list given with the second command, the SSID you are referring to is not present :
You said that earlier :
More interesting (?):
‘wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf&’
does not recognize
'network={
ssid=“my_essid”
…
}
The SSID “my_essid” doesn’t seem to exist in your vicinity.
Type in yast2 and go to Network Devices => Network Settings to try to connect to the right SSID.
Hello DaaX,
what I tried to say is that wpa_supplicant refuses to recognize ANY of the commands between network={ and the closing
} (e.g. not recognizing “key_mgmt=WPA-PSK” and all other commands between the curly braces).
Best regards,

I understand,
But in between the curly braces, there is this :
ssid=“my_essid”
So, if I understand well, the interface try to connect to a non existent ssid in your vicinity form what I see in your iwlist scan command. Am I right in my understanding ?
