Every time I try to install a package, say for example “Geany” which is a c++ IDE from the community repositories, I always get an error like this: “some dependency problem”. I have attached the log file you guys can have a look at it and tell me what is wrong.
those are some REALLY strange dependency problems…it seems like it
wants to UNinstall openSUSE 11.4
what package are you trying to install, and from where???
i don’t know how you are trying to install, but try this (it is a very normal way to install stuff onto openSUSE):
-click on YaST
-give root password when asked
-go “Software Repositories” and disable all repos except those for
11.4 oss, non-oss, update and packman
-click ok
-go “Software Management”
-in the search block type geany
-click search
-in right pane see “geany” (and, some others probably)
-single left click the box to the left of “geany”
-a check mark will appear in that box and every other box that YaST
‘knows’ you will need (unless you want to help develop geany itself,
you will not need “geany-devel”)
-click “Accept”
-YaST may or may not show you a list (long or short) of items it wants
to install along with geany–say OK/Yes/Please!! because those are the
‘dependencies’ which MUST be present on the system for geany to
operate as expected…
-after some whirring and clicking geany will have been installed and
you can then find it in the menu system…
coming from Ubuntu (i guess) you might also like zypper, which is
(i understand) kinda apt-like
if by following the above step-by-step you get a similar long list
to UNinstall, do NOT accept it
do NOT assume anything you learned in Ubuntu is any more correct
here as anything you may have learned on a Mac or Win machine…yes
Linux is Linux, but “Linux” is a kernel everything else is a
distribution, and SUSE existed before even Debian…so . . .
other differences are covered in one or more of these links:
read my caveat prior to making any changes to your system.
