YAST can't download and install progs from the software.opensuse.org

Hi everyone,
I use openSUSE 11.1 and my YAST can’t connect Internet: How to configure my YAST Internet configuration through proxy server in order to download and install the programs (for example dwnld and install WML from software.opensuse.org)

IP: 192.168.1.1
port: 8080

And your internet connection works when posting this, browsing the internet?
Please be as clear as you can about what you want to achieve, post error messages.

In this case also post output of:

zypper lr -d

I have an Internet in browser Mozilla in openSUSE. I need to install WML to openSUSE. First, I connected to software.opensuse.org and typed to the search area WML and search found one WML. Then (if you know this site, there is a button 1-Click Install) I presses to 1-Click Install button and a pop-up window apeared with this message: Dou you want to open this file by YAST or Save it to Disk. I chose open this file by YAST. YAST required root privileges and I entered as a root. About 2 min YAST tried to install the WML showing 4%, but it stopped and show like this message: YAST can’t download the files from the site, or can’t connect to the server
I can’t find what is the problem? Maybe there somewhere in YAST configuration place for Internet setting?

Can u tell me exactly at what point does it exactly stop? Is it something like refreshing repositories… if so then go to your terminal try zypper -v refresh, u may come to know at what point exactly is your repositories are they being refreshed or not at all, once they are refreshed try one click install again

I unchecked the refreshing the repositories, then the installation progressed :-), but while trying to install there occured another problem, message of window: UI Syntax Error. Out of memory. Check the log file!
I do not know which log file in my disk I have to check and after cheking I do not know how to solve the UI Syntax error…
Maybe, something needs to be configured properly for dwnlding?

I’ve tried to install: VLC media player, uTorrent, Deluge, Wine and Audacity and this is the message I always get:

The install link or file you opened does not contain instructions for this version of openSUSE.

What does this mean and what do I do about it other than going back to Windows? Open Suse is proving a bad experience and my son has just texted me: ‘Sorry to say I told you so’.

Can anyone help or do I go buy Windows on Monday? My laptop came with Linux OS - on promotion - I’d be glad not to use Windows but have wasted hours and hours on this since buying the laptop a week ago. Got no more hours I can spare for this.

Thanks.

Your repository setup is wrong. What version of openSUSE do you have installed?

Why did you wait so long before asking? The volunteers are here to help. Once we
get it working, and we will, you can ask your son why he keeps wasting so much
time rebooting.

to build on what Larry wrote:

to learn what version of openSUSE you have installed, open a terminal

lots of ways to do that! one way is to press and hold Alt and then press
F2…and, in the blank that pops up (near the top usually) type xterm
and then hit return…

a new window should pop up with a “prompt” type there

cat /etc/SuSE-release

and you will get something kinda like this

openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
VERSION = 11.4
CODENAME = Celadon

or, maybe you get something completely different…we need to know what
it says…you can copy paste the window’s out put back to here…

and, while there go ahead and please show us the output of entering the
following into a terminal

zypper lr -d

and copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

we can use the second output to help you get your repos set up
correctly…after that it will be smooth sailing…

and, it is hopeless to try to get your Windows only experienced son to
help…some day, you can help him kick the expensive software
habit…not to mention all the money saved by not having to buy
anti-virus junk ware…

patience, will save you a LOT of money in the long run. (and you machine
will be quicker also…)

what software do you need to run with WINE? most windows applications
have alternatives…

Thanks very much for the prompt replies and offers to help. I followed the first instruction easily and got this:
Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (i586)
Patch level = 1

However, trying to follow the next part after zypper lr -d
just did not work. Something long and complicated came up and I spent a long time trying to copy paste it but copy paste doesn’t work and the other instruction through
Posting in Code Tags - A Guide
was totally mystifying, though I clicked on several of the links.

Please let me know how to do the copy paste so that I can send on that info.

I need Wine, I think, because I have many PowerPoint, PDF and Word docs which I need for my job (I’m an academic). Also, where I work (China) the computer software is antiquated at my university and was having trouble with Word 2007 docs, never mind anything in future which I will be generating on Linux software. The copy shops, too, are all running Word 2003! - really messes with my nice formatting. So, having researched online, I assume I may have to use Wine to convert to and from Word docs??? But maybe got it wrong?

ok, you are in great good luck…your computer came with the
commercial linux named SUSE Linus Enterprise Desktop (SLED) which is
made, distributed and supported by the folks at http://tinyurl.com/422mrnu

it is similar to openSUSE, but nowhere near identical…and, it is not
possible to use openSUSE repos to update it…

you must use the SLED repos…

now, i do not know if you computer maker actually purchased a license or
support package for you, if not you will need to set that up yourself…

now, you are welcome to ask questions here and hope for a person
knowledgeable in SLED to help…but, be advised you must always declare
you are using SLED so folks like me who knows almost nothing about SLED
won’t lead you down a path to ruin…

or, if you wish to convert to openSUSE i wouldn’t advise that until you
have determined if you have a year support already purchased…

and finally, i hear most MS Office apps run pretty good in WINE, but
i’ve never used any of those, so i can’t comment past i really like
LibreOffice…

one thing i won’t suggest is you install windows…but, if that is what
you want . . .

I have not tried Office under Wine, but LibreOffice (formerly OpenOffice) can
read and write all Office files. The only problems I have had were with files
for Access. We have Office 97 Pro, and OpenOffice works with Windows 7 64-bit,
whereas Office 97 will not. For Access usage, I had to create a virtual machine
with Windows XP. Note, I don’t use that Redmond OS, but my wife does. Windows 7
is better than any previous version, but she has a collection of shortcuts to
various batch files that do things like restart the 7’s print spooler when it
dies, etc. Not needed for openSUSE - same printer,

Office 2010 doesn’t work very well under WINE at all at this stage, from
what I’ve read.

Only limitation I’ve run into is that .docx comments don’t render
correctly in LibreOffice, and any comments you make in LibreOffice don’t
get exported to the file.

Hendersj and IWfinger, thanks for that very useful information. I will bear it in mind. I don’t intend to use Office 2010 as it’s bad enough being on 2007 when everyone else is on 2003.
‘Virtual machine’ aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh what’s that. I’m sure I don’t want it.
I will look into LibreOffice, though.

DenverD, thanks for that. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this news.
So why doesn’t it say anywhere that the normal SUSE information is no use, so that people don’t waste their time?
Really appreciate the link. I will see if they are helpful.

whats in a name? these are two different names “openSUSE” and “SUSE
Linux Enterprise” with very few letters in common…

if i google SUSE this is the first hit:
SUSE Linux Enterprise
http://www.suse.com/

so, tell me why anyone would go to a completely different named site?

but, (and i freely admit that i have never seen SUSE/SLED running, so i
do not know) is there a “help” icon to press on the desktop (there is in
openSUSE it looks like a lifesaver’s ring to toss in the water) and if
there is, and you click on it does it lead you to opensuse.org or
somewhere else?? (if it sends you to opensuse.org i REALLY want to know,
because that would be a bug for them to FIX!)

there are LOTs of info for your SLED here:
http://www.suse.com/documentation/sled11/
i guess (don’t know, never looked) that the Quick Start Guide tells
you the methods needed to install VLC media player, uTorrent, Deluge,
Wine and Audacity…

> Really appreciate the link. I will see if they are helpful.

hope they are! you may need to have your license/support agreement
number available…(don’t know, i’ve never sought support there)

don’t forget the good news: if you machine is working fine with SLED it
is Linux compatible, not all machines are…having a linux compatible
machine means you can pick from literally hundreds of Linux distros…

AMD, as an ‘academic’ working in china (with perfect english) if you
find the need to move away from SLED because you don’t want to pay its
modest support costs, you will find lots to choose from, including
openSUSE, and http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Education

and you will find a newly emerging, vibrant open software community
budding all around the country (kicking the habit of holding on to VERY
old and very expensive software which was cracked, and not purchased in
the first place)…

OH, and btw, you might find an active openSUSE cell on campus very
willing to help you through the pains, try hooking up…maybe by posting
to the China version of this forum accessible from the page
forums.opensuse.org (i guess they won’t mind a few english posts there,
we have and continue to allow posts here in Chinese…

Thanks for the helpful reply. I will check into all that.

No, there is not a ‘help’ icon of any kind. It was very difficult to find my way into anything at all and no explanatory docs I could discover. I went online and found the opensuse website and, not realising that there was more than one kind of suse, I used the information there, which actually worked. However, when you try to install a program, you are supposed to use Yast install which should more or less lead you through, which it does, except that at the last stage, it says it can’t complete. So then I went online to everywhere I could find, and discovered this thing called repositories, and that I needed to download something which was missing, as I was able to ascertain, having been led to the place where all those added on programs live in my computer. Then I found that the thing which I apparently needed, did not exist - this was according to various posts and links which I found online.

The laptop is an HP 620 and came loaded with the Suse Enterprise but the chap at the electrical showroom where I bought it (here in Bulgaria), had a lot of trouble installing it. In fact, the first day he ended up locking down the whole system. Luckily, I had not paid yet as he first suggested that I would have to go to a technical shop to get it unlocked. Oh no, I did not think so. I said he needed to get it unlocked and properly loaded and that I would come back when he called to say that he had done so!

Anyway, now that you guys have helped me to understand what is going on, I will try to work it out with the SLED forum. I did come across the China ‘Ambassador’ on my travels round the net looking for answers but it seems there is only one for the whole of China! Not a lot out of over a billion! So I don’t feel very hopeful about finding an English speaking techie to help me out in my town.

I’ve just had a reply from the SLED forum so will check out what they had to say.

Thanks again.Really appreciate the help and advice.

Word, Excel, and Powerpoint 2007 work quite well in Wine. Access can be made to work, but with issues, and Outlook doesn’t work at all.

My experience with LibreOffice has been that it generally does fine with xls/xlsx files (but keep in mind that I only use basic spreadsheet functions), handles doc/docx files with some minor formatting issues, and will completely mess up ppt/pptx files.

I use it with VMware Workstation. “Virtual Machine” is just that - a
system running under hardware emulation. Have a look at web pages for
VMware, Virtual Box, and QEMU to get an idea what the technology is.
