is there anyway of stopping yast from closing once packages are installed, it would nice to keep it open, especially when loading dependent packages.

In ‘settings’
Then on the left ‘Edit Signature’
But you may have to wait a little longer to use one. I can’t recall the settings in our admin control, but new users to forum have to wait for their post count and or membership time to increase. It’s a spam prevention method.

Yast → System → Editor for sysconfig → System → Yast2 → GUI
→ PKGMGR_ACTION_AT_EXIT → “summary”
Or edit /etc/sysconfig/yast2 directly
