XViD playback stopped working.

Ok, this is weird. I guess it has to be weird if it is the first real problem I have had since SuSE 6.3…

But, I digress…

I am now having problems decoding XViD files with XINE-based players (Kaffeine, etc.). Earlier today they decoded just fine, but later… Nothing. XINE-ui complains about an “unsupported codec”. I have the w32-all codecs installed.

Some info:
XViD - 1.1.3-0.pm.0 - Packman
libxine1 - 1.1.15-0.pm.0 - Packman
Kaffeine - 0.8.7-0.pm.1 - Packman
w32-all - 20071007-0.pm.1 - Packman
libavicodec51 - 0.4.9svn-200815.pm.0 - Packman

XINE-ui error message when trying to decode the files:
"The stream ‘There is no MRL.’ uses and unsupported codec: Video Codec: DivX 5 (DX50) (null)

BTW: MPlayer playes the files just fine. I have uninstalled and re-installed all of the files at least twice. I have also removed all of the personal config files. I hope someone out there is having the same problem or has solved this problem.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

The big question would be… what happened between “earlier today” and
“later”.

Was there an update?

The command:

rpm -qa --last | less

Will show a list of the software installed (via rpms) in reverse
chronological order, with the install date listed in the second column. Did
anything related get updated ‘today’ ?

and a totally long-shot query, which I dislike asking someone to do… but
have you rebooted since then? Maybe it might help if you did?

Thanks for the response.

In answer to your question: There was an update today but it was all centered around MySQL and Python. Nothing surrounding A/V playback was touched. After I noticed the issue, I uninstalled and re-installed all of the XINE and XViD related components. As for a reboot, none since the 9th, when I updated the VirtualBox kernel module.

Thanks again.

EDIT: The only thing I did between “earlier today” and “later” was do some grocery shopping at my local store and butcher shop.

AHA!! Do you perchance purchase Rutabaga? That could be the answer!!

{Grin}

Ok, maybe not…

These xvid files… Does a file which decoded this morning, still decode this
evening? I’m asking if you’re basing this error on a known good file,
suddenly not working, or a new file which doesn’t work, but xine/kaffeine
worked on some other files this morning.

‘decoding’… meaning what? There may be another way to decode your files.
I mention this since I use mencoder in a custom script to rip dvd’s. It
works quite well and will also handle a vast variety of input formats,
converting all to my desired output format.

(please note, I don’t care WHAT you’re decoding, I’m looking to help with HOW
you’re decoding…)

The files are known good files. Not only are they known good, they are files I personally created.

This is very confusing.

The audio from the file plays normally but the video does not. To me, this indicates a problem with my back-end decoding the XViD encoded video but no problem with the MP3 encoded audio.

As for purchasing Rutabaga, I did not. I did however purchase Brussels Sprouts. Could that be a problem?

Make sure you are using libffmpeg0 package from packman and not the vlc repo.
I encountered this problem too, and I was using the one from vlc-repo. Switching to libffmpeg0 from packman fixed it.

Checked the repo for libffmpeg0 and it was from VLC. Switched to the Packman repo for libffmpeg0 and now it works. Thank you very much! Case closed. lol!

Congratulations!

Are you using opensuse 10.3? or 11.0? That information would have helped
since vlc was merged into packman for the 11.0 opensuse… which prevents
this error entirely.

Glad you’re up and working now though.
