Try to get this straight. On the boot screen suse is listed, xp listed 2 lines down, when I click xp suse is highlighted, never boots into xp. When I click the next suse listed, forget the name, at work on the mac, I get a login that says, “have fun” no fun here. System is sata a for xp, sata b for KDE 4.1 live download 8/12. I can load xp with the cd, but xp needs to re-install, loseing all my stuff.
Thanks :?
OK, there are three entries – Suse followed by windows followed by Suse failsafe.
Q1: did I get it right?
Q2: what version of Suse are you using
Q3: can you boot into normal Suse from item 1 in the menu?
1 suse
2 suse failsafe
3 windows 2000
- I can boot into suse, not windows.
- failsafe give me a line to login, I login
and get “have a good time”. Login again,
same. - I have Xp not 2000, arrow keys to windows,
enter, suse is highlighted, starts. - I have KDE 4.1 live on sata b. This doesn’t
make sense, maybe a re-install?
- failsafe give me a line to login, I login
Failsafe is supposed to give you bare bones entry, just a console, so that bit works OK (not very useful for new users).
- I have KDE 4.1 live on sata b. This doesn’t
make sense, maybe a re-install?
Don’t reinstall just yet – we might be able to save you some work.
Please post here a few diagnostics:
I would like to see the partition setup, the Grub menu that goes with it and which hard drive has the boot pointer ATM. Please open a console (if you can in that wretched KDE4.1) and enter these three commands:
- sudo /sbin/fdisk -l
- sudo cat /etc/grub/menu.lst
- sudo cat /etc/grub/device.map
That will generate a long dialogue. Please use your mouse and copy/paste the whole dialogue back here.
Thanks
