Xorg still an option?

I’m new to Linux (less than a year). I have a need to still be in Xorg (unassisted remote), but many distros are switching to Wayland-only releases. Does the latest OpenSUSE still offer the ability to switch to xorg from the login screen?

That very much depends on which desktop you’re using. I know LXQt is still X11 by default, and I believe XFCE is. I honestly don’t know if GNOME still has an X11 session, I believe Plasma is wayland by default, but the X11 session is installed, and you can switch to it.

I use mate desktop with xorg. I’m afraid to try wayland in leap 15.6 as I use nvidia proprietary drivers.

Wait until you upgrade to Leap 16, then try a Wayland desktop session of your choice. If it doesn’t work well with your setup, you can easily switch back to your preferred X11 session from the login screen. No need to be fearful.

Yeah, I’ve tried Wayland on other distros. I do like it, but the lack of unassisted remote support is a deal breaker for me.

There is a possible problem here.

If using GDM for display manager, it seems that only Wayland sessions are available. However, if I use SDDM or LIGHTDM, then I can select Xorg sessions.

GNOME was removing Xorg support in GNOME 49, but they did back off of it - but I know that on TW (and assume on Leap 16.0), no Xorg session was delivered, so while it’s possible to run GNOME on Xorg with GNOME 49, it seems like it would be a bit of work to set the session up (says the guy who hasn’t really looked at what it would take to do that - maybe it’s easy  ).

Maybe use sddm as Displaymanager to get Gnome on X11.

I do it in Leap 16.0.

On Leap 16 gnome-session-xsession is provided, Gnome is still at 48, but gdm is configured to ignore xsession apparently, so you need another display manager to enter an X11 session as @nrickert and @Sauerland suggested.

From the Leap 16.0 gdm changelog:

Mon Apr 7 15:06:20 UTC 2025 - Joan Torres <joan.torres (at) suse.com>

- Disable X11 support on SLE:
  * SLFO will only support Wayland

But it’s working with sddm.

Yes, sddm is not part of SLE, it is provided via backports.

MATE desktop does not have a wayland version.

There is no x11vnc in Leap 16. there is only tigervnc-x11vnc and it is not backwards compatible - I have yet to see how to get the active desktop working remotely - only a secondary desktop, which is now how to show someone how to do something.

Interesting, I’ll have to give that a try.

I did know that it had been reverted - I noted it was reverted in this merge request: Re-enable X11 support (!314) · Merge requests · GNOME / gdm · GitLab

I recently switched from LM to Tumbleweed and installed GNOME, but could not connect with Anydeskt to remote machine, so considering to switch back to the good old Xfce…anyone knows which DM is installed by default for Xfce DE?

It is lightdm.

Returning to answer my own question. I’ve been running Leap 16 for several days now, however I elected to use the KDE Plasma build, which does still offer the X11 option from login - and I’m happy to report that unassisted remote is working great. I presume it’ll be a couple years before that will be possible on Wayland, so I’ll likely be stuck with X11 for quite some time.
