Xorg runs cpu at 100%+ when system idle.

I’m running 11.2 with KDE 4.4. Ever since updating KDE to 4.4, Xorg runs flat out when I’m not using the computer. As long as I am using the computer, all is fine. When I stop using the machine and the screen blanks, I can hear the CPU fan going full blast and can feel heat from the CPU running full blast. When I unblank the screen and start using the machine the system monitor shows Xorg running at above 100% cpu. Xorg immediately goes down to its usual 3 or 4%. In the little time I have before that happens, I can’t see anything else out of the ordinary running.

This did not happen under KDE 4.3. The machine is a 64 bit AMD machine with ATI Radeon 9200 graphics. Oddly enough, when I updated the machine to 11.3 this did not happen. I had to downgrade to 11.2 because the Samsung laser printer driver will not run on AMD machines with 11.3 due to a glibc 2.11 conflict (so I’m told). I would like to fix this problem as the machine runs too hot when the cpu goes full blast for long periods.

Try addin another user see if the problem is there also. Upgrading and downgrading could leave odd configuration files laying around.

You are right. It doesn’t seem to happen under a different user. What configuration file could it be?

Got no real clue. Some where in .kde4 I suspect. You could try renaming that directory. note this should be done from a terminal without the GUI running as the user of the directory. (you don’t change tires while driving the car) Or if you want to try to be a little more surgical delete all files that have plasma in its name in the ~/.kde4/ share/config directory. That would bring you back to the default desktop. Though the problem could be elsewhere. Note that most KDE specific apps keep data in the .kde4 directory. So if you use kmail or something you may want to preserve the data.

Thanks. I’ll take a look there.
