Xorg hangs (openSuse 11.3)

Hi,

When I login, Xorg hangs. I can start Xorg as a root, but not as a regular user. Here is my Xorg log file:

I have previously experienced problems with the synaptics driver and I used to remove the entire synaptics package on openSuse 11.1. I have also tried the option “nomodeset” typed in grub GUI before starting the OS as I read in the release notes that there may be a video driver problem if this option is used. Also there is a problem with my video card if RadeonHD driver is used (power management I guess) on openSuse 11.2, but this must not be related to the current problem as radeon driver is used. Can you help me with some advice?

Not sure opensuse require it but check if your user is part of the group Video

cat /etc/group | grep video

If your are not add your user to this group
(if your user name does not appear on the line return by the previous command

need to be root

groupmod -A <user_name> video

So you get to the login screen and enter username and pass and it hangs?

Are you saying you can run KDE/Gnome as root but not as your user?

If so what happens if you create a new user and try to log in from that?

If that works then I would suggest there is something in you old /home/~
that is causing problems, some setting for whichever wm/dm you are using.

If you use kde then just rename the .kde dir and try again, if it works then
it will be somewhere in there, you can just copy back from the backup stuff
one at a time to see which crashes it.

Creating a new user solved the problem.

Thanks for your help.

No probs,

You must have some old settings for the desktop no doubt that are messing
about, as I say if you need to use that user then just rename the .kde4 or
whichever and then login a default .kde4 will be created then you can
manually copy stuff back from the old one.

that way is long winded but it usually is in the /.kde4/share/config dir that
the problems is.

So that can narrow it down a bit.

If it was me I would copy all except the config dir back and then see what
happens when you login as that user, then just copy bits at a time and
logout and in again till you hit the con fig file that halt it, retrace steps
and delete the offending file.

If this is in gnome then something similar I suppose, sorry don`t do gnome
so not much help there though.
