If I open up xmms in Konsole, then I get this as a reply:

Where did you get this from ? Did you compile it ? You might want to check out xmms2:

Xmms is way old and has been superseded by xmms2, however xmms2 is an audio framework and plugin architecture which has to be used in association with a client application like LXMusic. If you want a traditional Winamp style music player then Audacious would be more suitable.
