xinerama config

Hello all,

If not sure if this is the right forum, if not please guide me to the right place.

I would like to adjust Xinerama to place 1 desktop on each of my 2 monitors and not stretch a single over both. With the current set up there is a problem with window placement upon opening new widows or context dialog boxes. I realize that I could adjust placement properties and select window placement with the mouse but this is still lacking in productivity. My monitors are not next to on another so this is more of a problem than it seems.

Thx
Jeremy

But the whole point of Xinerama is to treat two (or more) monitors as one desktop! What I assume you mean is to have two X screens: that way apps will place their windows on whatever screen you open them on, but you cannot move the windows between screens, and you’ll have two panels by default (you can of course delete one but you’ll need two for access to your apps). The mouse will move freely between the two screens though, so this loooks like what you want.

Sorry for not understanding xinerama’s main purpose. The last time I had to dig even a little deep I was writing my FVWM scripts and thats been a long time. I’m afraid I haven’t kept up.
Let me get this straight, your solution has 2 instances of Xwindow running?

That would be better than my current setup but can you suggest another extension that will allow a desktop per monitor. This way I could simply choose “switch to desktop” and move windows from desktop to desktop (monitor to monitor.)

Xinerama is old and deprecated, doesn’t work with compositing for a start (at least not with NVIDIA). Don’t know what video you have, but Twinview is the only real option with NVIDIA cards for one desktop across monitors. For two separate desktops, two X windows is the only option.

Unfortunately I am using an x300 ATI, I needed a cheap PCIE card and a friend of mine has about 50 of these (pulls.) $10 and instant gratification. I have used the nvid cards in the past and had great experiences with them; unfortunately they are now outdated. Is there a particular nvid chip set that you would recommend. I do not game so pushing triangles is not a big concern. (that phrase may be out of the vogue) I mean it does not have to be very powerful at all, just well supported.
