XGI Volari-XP5

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.

The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn’t work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell’s site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

Is there a way to skip the splash screen and go into the command line from Startup Options?

I found the problem! OpenSuse recognizes the card but doesn’t have the driver. Debian has the driver but doesn’t recognize the card. Can I merge them into one perfect OS?

If the Linux driver exists in theory at least you should be able to use it. What is the driver maybe some one has done it.

I forgot but it has “Volari” in the name.

I got…Fedora to work because it has the option of using a generic video driver. Sadly that means no fancy animations, but its better than nothing. Does OpenSUSE have that same option?

Which generic driver?? LOL it is hard to answer when we don’t know what you are talking about. Vesa? yes it has that. But any of the generic drivers do not do 3D acceleration so most eye candy is still unavailable.

have you tried the :

Trident CyberBladeXP

or it might be called something similar.

Driver.

not sure on the performance but XGI cards can use that as they were made by
Trident.

I know there is a cyberblade frame buffer driver in the kernel and there
should be one in X but if not then you will have to use the vesa one.

Vesa.

I tried typing vesa=1024x768 at boot options but it didn’t work.
