I’m running openSUSE 12.2 (64 bit) on a Lenovo X220t. I’ve been using Xfce for a few days, and overall I am very happy with it (I formerly enjoyed Gnome, under openSUSE 11.4).
However there is one aspect that is aggravating. I use multiple workspaces, and typically inany given workspace I will have a number of open windows (partially or totally hiding each other) as well as some minimized windows. To navigate between these windows, I’d like to have each one identified in the panel; but all I am able to see is those windows that have been minimized.
Yes, I can right click on the desktop and sort it out, but that is indirect and shouldn’t be necessary. I’ve dribbled around in the Settings Manager, and the cure is not obvious to me.
In any given workspace, I want the panel to show all applications that are open, whether or not they are minimized. It’s probably easy, but I am stumped. Thanks, JDW

I have never seen that feature you ask for. It is normal that only the
applications that have a window are displayed in the panel.

I guess I must not have explained it clearly. Unless I’m mistaken (I’ll check later today on my other machine, on which I use Gnome) under Gnome it didn’t matter whether a window was minimized or up there to use, it did appear in the panel. But irrespective of that, the immediate problem I’m having is that applications that DO have a window are not showing up in the panel. Thus if they’re hiding each other it’s a little irksome to have to go looking for them. Cheers JDW
I can’t see how to attach screenshots, but for sure under Gnome (on a different machine, running openSUSE 11.4) the panel displays both minimized and open (un-minimized) windows from the active workspace.
This is not the case under Xfce as I have it configured (accidentally or otherwise), where applications that DO have a window are not showing up. The issue is that you have to fiddle to get to a window that is hidden behind others. JDW

I’m using 11.4 and gnome, and minimized windows are not listed in the
panel of desktops. They appear in the panel bar of the current desktop,
and then, only those applications of the current desktop (this may be
configurable).
At home I have another machine with 12.1 and xfce, and the behaviour is
the same.

By panel do you mean the small thing that displays a square for each
desktop, and inside small squares for each window running in that desktop?
I do not see minimized apps there. Impossible.
If you mean the horizontal bar with a rectangle for each running
application, with the name printed, then yes, both minimized and normal
windows are listed.

I don’t. I just alt-tab, or alt-shift-tab, till I get to the one I want.

I’m not sure how to interpret your “I don’t. I just alt-tab, or alt-shift-tab, till I get to the one I want.” – I guess you mean you don’t regard this as having to fiddle. I guess one might get used to it, but it sure is handy to have all windows laid out on the panel. Thanks for the help. JDW
I think what he means is the window- buttons in the xfce4-panel.
It is customizable, just rightclick the window-button in the panel and you can enable the option to show labels plus the icon even if it is maximize.
Edit:
To do, open one application, when you see the icon in the panel
before it you will see a tiny horizontal lines, right click it, the rest is self explanatory.
If I right click with the mouse over the panel my options are Properties (not helpful), Move, Remove and Panel… if I go with Panel I don’t find this option… maybe I have not understod where to look.
I edited my first post, please have another look at it.
even if there is no open application just find the window-button and right click the mouse on top of it.
To add you maybe using a different one it might be the window-menu but they work all the same
and the proper way of customizing are the same for both.

When you find it and right click on top it will show the name and not the panel
Wow! Thanks – that’s BRUTAL. Yes, just to the left of the icon in the panel I see these little dotted vertical lines (two of them) that I thought were just a separator – it never would have occurred to me to click on them… and sure enough, doing so I get a “Window Buttons” dialog box, in which (under “Filtering”) the option “Show only minimized windows” had been checked. I unchecked that, and I have want I want. This is really quite an obscure place to look! Thanks for the tip. JDW

I get the same behaviour under gnome in 11.4 and xfce in 12.1, in both I
get all windows listed, minimized or not.

It needs using the mouse and locating the right rectangle, that’s slow.
For me the keyboard is fast, I get to the wanted window instantly.
