I got openSUSE leap 42.2 installed and use xfce as GUI. The problem is, that sometimes the system boots to a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I than hit
ctrl+alt+f1
I get to the command line and am able to log in and start the GUI using
init 5
Unfortunately the Network options are then disabled. This can than be solved restarting the computer, where sometimes it directly boots into the GUI, but in other cases it runs into the same problem as above and I again have to restart until I end up in the GUI.
Some prior information: I installed openSUSE next to my windows 7. After I crashed windows 7 and would have had to repair it, I decided that I’m anyway sick of Windows and deleted the partition. The free space is now mounted to some directory in openSUSE. Before doing so I sometimes ran into other problems with the GUI, namely that it started to a log-in screen, to which I automatically returned when entering the login data (rather than loging in to the system).
This might not have to do anything with your problem, but it is a bit confusing.
You say you deleted the partition (I assume one of the first on the disk). Why?
Then you say that you mounted that free space. That is impossible. You can not mount free space. You can mount a file system. And that file system must be located somewhere. In this case most probably on the partition you earlier used for Windows. But you say that partition is removed???
It could be that you mean that you created a new (Linux) file system on that partition and then mounted it (on a mount point you do not specify). That would be understandable.
I am running 42.2 with Xfce on a couple of laptops with none of the issues you mentioned. I have no suggestions for you at this point, other than to suggest you re-install using the DVD installer and see if your problems go away.
I agree that it is difficult to advise anything about problems that happen “sometimes”. As long as there is no pattern found one can only guess
A re-install, how futile normally, is then the only thing I can think of also. And when it helps (as we all hope). we will never know what the real problem was.
