XFCE icons and text missing in settings manager, appearing after hover over.

I am new here after many years using various versions of OpenSuse (Gnome) on several computers.

Recently I bought an Intel NUC ppyh (Braswell), a recent release - 2015, and now setting it up as HTPC. After long struggles to find a working distro for the UEFI , graphics support, HDMI output in combination with Kodi, I ended up with OpenSuse 13.1 (tried and failed: OpenSuse 13.2, OpenSuse tumbleweed, Mint 16-17, Fedora 22). Even the 13.1 kernel was giving HDMI-issues, so I upgraded to kernel 4.2.3.2.g202286f-default in combination with XFCE4.10. The appearance style is : XFCE-cadnium. So far so good.

I now seem to be having a graphics problem for I cannot find a solution on google. It is related to the icons and texts in “settings manager”, amongst many other windows. When opening the settings manager, the “white” text/icon-box appears completly empty, but when I then hover over the box, all icons appear…tada:O. In sub-items, icons are also gone and appear the same way…Same with text in textboxes. Any text/icons in the grey areas of the windows never disappears…Utterly strange. …I remember I had a similar problem on a distro more than 10y ago, but my memory is failing me how I solved it. This is only a problem in XFCE, as in Gnome everything works fine. Any clues?

You give a great deal of information but since the problem appears video related you did not mention your video card/driver :open_mouth:

In any case you are running an odd system with a cutting edge kernel. Nothing wrong with that but you have to expect glitches.

Not entirely clear why you thought you needed the advanced kernel and you appear to be running an older OS 13.1

I agree this is an odd combination, but the best so far after much bigger issues with graphics with the standard 13.1-13.2 kernels. It is a kernel very similar in age to the one provided on Intel’s driver page for the NUC. This is an output from the hwinfo

I haven’t seen something like that for a very long time, but it seems to me at that time it was caused by a combination of

Graphics card (and driver)
Display Resolution
Physical Display

So, IMO changing some combination of the above might fix your problem…
Maybe first try a different display resolution.
If you have access to a different display, try that (although you may already be using HDMI instead of *VGA?)
