Okay I have a problem with XFCE and it is very cross distro it seems, you see I have a Samsung 19 inch LED TV that I use as a monitor for my machine and I have to connect it to my HDMI port as it lacks the older style connections like DVI and VGA.
Now this would not be a problem except for some reason if I switch it off and later power it on XFCE doesnt like it and I have to restart my computer.
Now this TV works with KDE, Gnome, Mate and every other desktop and display manager under the sun but not XFCE for reasons unknown.
And its not just isolated to XFCE 4.12, if I use say Xubuntu 14.04 with XFCE 4.10 its the same issue even with clean config files.
I even tested this out in a fresh setup on my second hard disk and its the same story, there are no config file conflicts nor any other nonsense that could cause this, I have not tried this in 32bit but it sure as heck an issue with 64bit.
I am using openSUSE 13.2 64bit gnome edition right now but its the same story on the KDE version and am using the gnome edition to verify that openSUSE is also effected by this bizarre bug.
Its not like i can hook a VGA cable up or a DVI to HDMI as my TV does not have an audio jack for audio input from my computer so using a jack is useless
HDMI is my only option and I dont have the money for a new TV so that is out, its a good TV and this being isolated to one DE does not justify the cost of a new unit.
But the issue with my HDMI is that my graphics card is running off the open driver on linux, I have a in built ATI HD 4200 card to work with and once again buying a new graphics card is out of the question so I have to work with what i have.
Edit i put this in software as it seems isolated to XFCE, though technically its a hardware issue but since it is a xfce issue only I put it here.
Although I can’t recommend a proper fix, if other Desktops don’t have the same problem a possible workaround might be possible because openSUSE makes all Desktops and apps regardless of Desktop available from the same OSS repo…
You can install whatever Desktop you might prefer that provides best functionality and install your XFCE apps as well. The result likely will be up to double disk space use due to the additional libraries installed to support XFCE apps, but your system should in the end work fine.

I have a similar problem, TV, opensuse 13.1, KDE and HD 6670 using
Catalyst. I have concluded it is a mismatch between refresh rates, with
the card initialising at a rate the TV does not support (the on-screen
message), at/above 1080p60 even though the driver is set for 1080p50.
Restarting computer or TV corrects the problem. I do, however, also have
an HDMI powered auto-switch in the setup.
The problem usually occurs if the TV is set for aerial input and
switched to HDMI after the computer has initialised.
Hi,
I am using xfce 4.10 then updated it to xfce 4.12 and have no issue with my tv monitor.
Though I am using the proprietary nvidia driver to handle the display config.
The xfce display really has the problem with it in my experience using it.
What I do everytime I install xfce, I don’t touch the xfce display config and I also delete the
xfce display in the /home/user/.config/xfce-perchannel-xml, if it is present and use nvidia-settings
to configure the monitors(2-monitor+tv).
