Hi
I just installed openSUSE 11.1 Gnome, to try out Gnome. I’m doing an online update to make the install current. I see hundreds of x86_64 delta rpm’s installing. I don’t have a 64 bit CPU. Does this mean I’ve made a big mistake and installed the 64 bit version by mistake? Or that the mistake was in thinking that I have a 32 bit computer? How do I check?
Thanks

swerdna,
You cannot install 64bit on a 32bit arch, the disk will not let you, you
will get a warning message and the install stops.
If you are doing an “Update” then it must be “Updating” stuff that is
already installed therefore you must have them already?
You will just have to grin and bear it and wait till a reboot to see if it
works, and have your rescue DVD ready…

Well what a surprise. I bought the thing in 2005 – never dreamed it was 64 bit. here’s uname -a:
Linux suse111g 2.6.27.23-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-05-26 17:02:05 -0400 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It must be because I installed off the official boxed version DVD.
I never did find a way to force it not to, if I use the netinstall iso I can’t see a way of telling it not to use 64bit. As for boxed last one I had, you had two separate install media for 64bit and 32bit.
Heah and as you noticed what’s all this bother about 64bit
most of the time it is transparent.
Good, suddenly you get an extra 32-bits. You should celebrate.
As FeatherMonkey points out, you didn’t notice it at all, so there really isn’t so much fuss about running 64-bit.
This should be made a sticky, quoted all around the world whenever the ‘32 vs 64’ questions are asked
Thanks for making me smile for a while…
So here I am using 64 bit by accident. And Gnome by design.
It was all a bit of a surprise. Works just fine.
Thanks for the comments and chuckles.
