I have a weird problem with a 8800M GTX laptop video card. After installing the proprietary nvidia drivers, X works perfectly but after X starts, switching to any consoles (Alt-F1…F6) brings a black screen.
Booting with the x11failsafe kernel parameter solves that. Now, what EXACTLY does x11failsafe do ? I hope that i can isolate the actual problem (and hope it is a small one) so that i can work with the consoles without using the “entire” x11failsafe.

is the driver “nv” ?
driver is nvidia (nv was used for the old tnt64)
x11failsafe is new to me, too. Google wasn’t of help. Have you checked the nvidia site (and maybe forum) re driver versions and your 8800GTX? There have been occasions when the repository version is not quite the newest, i.e., there have been times when a user must install from the nvidia site to get a version for a particular card or to resolve a particular bug. (Note: If per chance this is applicable, be sure to remove the repository driver before installing from the script per the instructions; the two methods are entirely different and not compatible.)
You can temporarily boot by putting “apm=off acpi=off” in the options before booting. I’m not sure how to make that permanent.
Sorry, I don’t follow your post. x11failsafe is a new(?) kernel boot argument, separate from the power arguments you cite. In the “Failsafe” boot menu entry, all 3 are there.
