X11 Xorg repository

Ok… that happened. Despite of reading many treads here about problems after update I did it. I updated my X server from the Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg repository :frowning: first time, few days ago everything was OK! But today morning everything crashed :frowning:

Just after the updating I received the following errors of the X:
1)Failed to load module “freetype”

2)the number of errors like module ABI major version does not match server’s version for the modules: kbd, intel (i have intel onboard graphic card), mouse.

Then i tried to uninstall everything new. Switched the X11/Xorg repository off and intstalled X from suse repo. But that also didnt helped :frowning:

Now after starting X server I need to reboot since everything I see is black screen. I cannot switch to other console also…

Any help will be very appreciated. I dont want to reinstall the whole OS.

I was tinkering w/the repos earlier myself on one machine, and came across the exact same issue – that is, kbd and mouse drivers mismatched, hence (EE)s get thrown, no joy or Xserver; restoring the original ‘compatible’ versions of the files at least puts it in the place where the Xserver can come up, sans any kbd/mouse input ability. Nice.

Not being a total *NIX idiot, and having dealt with RPMs for longer than I care to admit, I’m curious as to why dependency checking is so wiggly in this distro.

Not trying to excuse my own foolishness, of course – then again, I’ve got more than one machine to use, so I’m tinkering just to see what is/is not possible – however, having spent enough time on RHEL systems and having made enough of my own RPMs, I am admittedly curious as to WTF is up with the allowances apparently being made in packages which would let the user/package-manager to upgrade one (say) Xorg component (e.g., the core parts, no less) while not griping about mismatches in everything else (e.g., input drivers et al). I mean, I’m assuming you didn’t do the updating CLI, right, but were using Yast2’s SW Management; that’s what I did, and am wondering if someone stuck a --nodeps switch in there I haven’t caught ;\

I’m curious to see what, if any, feedback anyone has as a solution to the above besides a full fall-back restore from backup or (even harsher, though always effective) fixing the issue w/a BMI/total re-OS of the system, which is the kind of thing I expect from MS Windows products than any Linux distro…But that’s just IMNSHO.

Hope you get your issue fixed w/o having to do the 'dust off & nuke ‘em from orbit’ tack.

Try running

zypper verify

in a terminal and see if it gives you any dependency issues.

Verification was succsessful, I’ve done it… :frowning:

Anyway - I reinstall the system. Now when updating some basic environment like X server or KDE I’ll give a try on ‘test machine’. But can I do it using just virtual soft. Will be results the same as if I really installed OS on my computer?

You don’t really need to reinstall the system as long as you have shell access.

Remove the Xorg repository then issue : zypper in -f -t pattern X11

This will pull the original Xorg pattern and reinstall it.

Thank for the hint, really nice feature of zypper I have not knew about. With the following command one can obtain the whole list of patterns: zypper search -t pattern | less See.

That gave the same result as Yast’s GUI/Ncurses package manager’s verification (everything A-OK, despite the (EE)'s thrown in the Xorg log); the output of zypper verify run as root on the system in question:
*Dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied.
*Good idea, though.

That is what I did, actually – I just now checked back on this thread to post, and you beat me to it.

About the only time I ever actually do a bare-metal (re)install these days is whenever I’m done with any machine which has been compromised – and that applies across the board, regardless of OS.

Somehow, this didn’t downgrade my xorg-x11 packages. I removed xorg:x11 repository from my repository list and issued: zypper dist-upgrade. That did the trick. Now, I’m back with ATI drivers and xorg-x11-server-7.4-17.3 from openSUSE-11.1-Oss.

BTW, I also noticed that Xorg:X11 is no longer listed in the community repositories.

aside from installing the standard xorg-x11-packages, you need to install “libdrm” from the oss-repository. “lidrm” is upgraded during x11 ugrade process, but it is not included in the x11 pattern.
