x11 not starting automatically on opensuse11.2 gnome

I am using Dell Vostro 1000 and I recently installed opensuse 11.2 gnome. It has ATI graphics card.

The x server does not automatically start by itself nor does the GUI login screen come up.

I have to login through the command line and startx manually to start x11.

It never had any problems with 11.1. Should I go back to 11.1 Please help!

I just checked and verified that the /sbin/runlevel is 5.

I will attach log/messages and dmesg as soon as I get a chance.

Please also advise exactly what ATI graphic card.

Please note post#8 in this thread, where an user whos Acer Aspire 5100 has an ATI Radeon Express 1100 and they found they had to download the xorg-11-driver-video update form Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg:/11.2/openSUSE_11.2 to fix a similar problem. Thread is here (again, post#8 has their solution): Can’t get X to start on Acer Aspire 5100 - openSUSE Forums

I am not able to install the latest x11 drivers (xorg-x11-driver-video-32bit-7.4-87.92.1.x86_64.rpm). It is giving me the following error message

An Internal System error has occured.
A problem we were not expecting has occured.
Please report this bug in your distribution bug tracker …
[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.y4GtvN] Repository already exists.

Is that the right driver? I had thought you only need xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-87.92.1.x86_64.rpm. My previous post noted xorg-x11-driver-video was the rpm to update.

Why are you installing xorg-x11-driver-video-32bit? Was it pulled in as a dependency? IMHO if that was not a dependency requirement, then I am not surprised to see such an error as I do not think it should be necessary and if not necessary it can cause problems.

Looking at the repository, you may also wish to install:
xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd-1.3.0_20091124_6387ab4-5.1.x86_64.rpm and xorg-x11-driver-input-7.4-41.1.x86_64.rpm .

But I do not see the need for xorg-x11-driver-video-32bit.

Sorry my bad. I was trying to install the wrong driver. Thanks for pointing it out.

Pardon my ignorance but I would like to learn how to install the depedencies using rpm package manager. Here is the output I am currently receiving:

Please provide the output of typing:

cat /etc/SuSE-release

linux-d9p6:~/Download # cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
VERSION = 11.2

Tried the i586 package and getting the same error. Cannot install it either. Please note that I have AMD 64 dual core processor and I installed the 32 bit version.

Yes, and above it suggests you were installing (or attempting to install) 64-bit version of those xorg apps.

Have you installed other 64-bit apps on this 32-bit openSUSE? That could really mess things up.

Note if its a 32-bit openSUSE you MUST install 32-bit apps. NEVER on a 32-bit openSUSE install 64-bit apps.

My apologies if I am stating the obvious, but your post has me wondering if this was not clear. Again, apologies for emphasizing the obvious (for some of us)

That’s ok. The reason I installed 32 bit was I wanted to get around the flash problem I was having on the opensuse11.0.

Anyway the current installation is pretty new. The only thing I installed on this version is the wireless driver using the following command:

sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43XX_firmware

This might have caused the issue. I know that when I login as a normal user the wireless connection is intermittent. When I login as a root it works perfectly fine. I should probably open a separate thread for this.

Should I remove this driver and try installing the xorg or even xfree86.
