I tried to install on OpenSuSE 10.3 jwm ( joe window manager ) and
conky ( both from source ) but the ./configure script tells me that I don’t
have X11.
X11 there is. ( tried to give configure, X11 paths but it misses some X
file again )
Is there some environment variable I’ve to set to let configure find all
X files it is looking for ??

Do you mean while X is running ?
it was, I was in bash consolle in windowmaker
Maybe this is because of missing devel packages. Make sure that all X11-devel packages are installed.
hope this helps
