X Won't start after YOU update on my Dell 700m With 855GM

Hey, just want to post that after installing the xorg update in YOU, X could not start with the error that basically, it just failed to start. I used Yast2 in terminal mode to roll back Xorg to the version included on the DVD and it works again.

Here is the section in the /var/log/Xorg file that seems to give the error; this is the last of the log.

Three things…

  1. X.org updates are scary.

  2. X.org updates are scary.

  3. What is your video card/driver situation and can you post a copy of your xorg.conf when encountering the problem? If you’re installing a video driver on your own, generally you’ll need to reinstall it if you mess with X.

Yes, this is a known issue and has been reported. I have that exact notebook model too. I don’t know why Novell hasn’t yet issued a package rolling back this change. I suggest you lock the package xorg-x11-driver-video to protect it from automatic update until this bug is fixed. And please vote the bug at bugzilla to add your voice.

Ken,

Is this just an Intel module bug?

I have just spent a few hours getting my system back after an update ( my
fault I put some baaaad stuff on as well

But all I had to do was re-install the ATI drivers and all is well again,
(after re-installing all things KDE4 though )

It only affects Intel video chips. This is not to say the other mfr models don’t have their own problems.
