X won't start after upgrade to latest kernel 6.0.0.1

Current system config:

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20221008
KDE Plasma Version: 5.25.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.98.0
Qt Version: 5.15.6
Kernel Version: 5.19.13-1-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz
Memory: 7.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.141.03
Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Product Name: OptiPlex 3020
System Version: 00

Everything works great and happy with above versions. But upon updating the system to today’s build (as of 11 Oct 2022), which includes kernel 6.0.0.1 and whatever new Nvidia drivers it comes with, X will not start. I had to boot to the 5.19 previous kernel.

Here’s the X.0.log.old from the failed upgrade boot.

Hi
There are a few Forum posts about this issue/bug (Suggest the search feature), old Nvidia driver…

For example: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/555096-No-xserver-after-installing-update-to-(VERSION_ID)-20210604-with-zypper-dup

I see the updated drivers are now present, so at the console, login as root user and do a zypper dup from there and should pull in the new rpms;

https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed/x86_64/

Hello,

Actually it was this morning (Oct. 11) that I had run ‘zypper dup’ and allowed the system to upgrade. After reboot, X would not start. I had to revert to the older boot image, and then I posted this thread. So whatever is the latest broke my system.

Thanks,
Derek

Hi
Did you lock your kernel by chance?

I am not sure how to do that (lock the kernel).

After this morning upgrade, I had the following boot options:
6.0.0.2
6.0.0.1
5.19.13-1

When booting with either 6.x kernels, X would not load. But by booting with the 5.x kernel, everything is fine.

I only have 6.0.0.1 kernel after

zypper dup

I’ve made about hour ago. I see no 6.0.0.2. Is this another problem ?

The latest kernel is kernel-default-6.0.0-1.2.x86_64.rpm so you have the latest one. This is always the problem when somebody only “guess” version numbers like the previous commenter dwm73 did.

https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/x86_64/kernel-default-6.0.0-1.2.x86_64.rpm

Nope. The latest kernel is kernel-default-6.0.0-1.2.x86_64.rpm which is shown as kernel 6.0.0.1 in bootloader. There is no 6.0.0.2 yet.

https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/x86_64/kernel-default-6.0.0-1.2.x86_64.rpm

so where come 6.0.0.2 from ?

…following boot options:
6.0.0.2
6.0.0.1

You have to ask dmw73 for that. But i provided you the link to the tumbleweed repository to show you that there is no kernel 6.0.0.2, You can search the repo yourself and search for the term “kernel-default”.
https://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/x86_64/

But in general comment #1 and title claims that the latest installed kernel is 6.0.0.1 and comment #5 says that it is 6.0.0.2. This is inconsistent and in my opinion a mistake…maybe some factory repos involved…

already done https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/576526-X-won-t-start-after-upgrade-to-latest-kernel-6-0-0-1?p=3165631#post3165631

Thank you, I’ve no doubt about what you have said.

 1. man zypper
 2. zypper al kernel-default*
 3. zypper addlock kernel-default-5.19.13*

#1 provides the instructions. #2 locks all kernel-defaults. #3 locks a specific kernel “version”. Yast can be used in place of zypper, but names it taboo rather than lock.

What information can I provide to help troubleshoot the issue? I can’t exactly take a screenshot given the nature of the circumstances. But I could provide whatever logs might help. Please recall the X log had mentioned:
NVIDIA: Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.

journalctl -r

Hi
If you have a) locked the kernel you need to remove the lock so the kernel can upgrade (or boot from it), then b) zypper dup to pull in the nvidia kmp that corresponds to the running kernel.

Suggest you do it all from the console at runlevel3/multi-user.target

OK so I rebooted into kernel 6.0.0.1 and X failed to load as mentioned in original post.

To capture a snapshot of logs, I ran: journalctl -r --no-pager -n 5000 > /root/lastjournal.out

And here is the system log from that boot sequence…well at least the latter part of it, since the forum wouldn’t allow a post longer than 15,000 chars.

I have not performed any sort of kernel locking, as I’m hoping to capture some info to help troubleshoot the issue.

Hi
So you need to force the re-install the nvidia rpms.

I’m happy to try that. I had originally perfomed “zypper dup” which led to this issue. So given the circumstances, what steps should I follow to force reinstall of the nvidia packages?

Hi
See what is installed and then use -f to re-install;

zypper se -i nvidia
zypper in -f <filenames from above list>
