Hello folks,
I want to make fglrx driver run on my system, but every time I install it (from AMD repository or AMD-website installer) x-server refuses to start and I end up at the console. After the installation xorg.0.log.old says:
3401.588] (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@2:0:0) found
3401.588] (EE) No devices detected.
3401.588] (EE) Fatal server error:
3401.588] (EE) no screens found(EE)
3401.588] (EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help.
3401.589] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
3401.589] (EE)
fglrxinfo says:
Error: unable to open display (null)
but “atconfig --initial” runs smoothly.
I checked the xorg.conf file and looked for doubled device information but there was none. I also checked the PCI from “lspci” and it matched.
Since I depend on this driver to be able to play games on openSUSE with a sufficient FPS I am very thankful for every suggestion.
openSUSE 13.2

Is this a note book??
run ccc I think for catalyst control centre If this is a hybrid machine ie both Intel and AMD GPU then you need to set things in ccc
Yes this is indeed a notebook, an Acer Aspire. And I think it has an Intel integrated GPU (Chip is: Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 430 @ 2.27GHz × 4) and a AMD dedicated GPU. Do you imply that he isn’t be able to open the device because he tries to start the x-server with the Intel integrated GPU
Nevertheless amdcccle is useless since it merely replies that it’s unable to open display. Is there another way to swtich to dedicated graphics? Maybe by BIOS?
I have another assumption. Is it possible that the fglrx_xpic driver (15.201.1151-1) is not compatible with my version of X-Server (7.6_1.16.1-19.1)?
Possibly we see more people with Intel+NVIDIA (Optimus) and that is different.
My understanding is that the regular fglrx driver should work and allow switching via a settings program. With Optimus you can’t turn off a GPU with the AMD equivalent I don’t know you can certainly try. Just know that the AMD is going to suck more juice then the Intel so will reduce battery life.
Could you show the result of
# lspci | grep 'VGA\|ATI'
and /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
BIOS didn’t have any options to switch graphics. I tried to install the repository driver again since it generates a fglrx-build.log and noticed that it had some problems building the kernel module. I wasn’t able to make head or tail of the log so I wanted to post it here. Then after removing the fglrx packages and loading the radeon kernel module gnome got problems with the 3D acceleration and the x-server still didn’t start xD.
Long story short since this is the third or fourth time that this notebook got such a huge problem with fglrx (I made it work twice but every update of fglrx screwed it up) I ended up using Ubuntu for gaming.
BUT for the record: I still use openSUSE on my second notebook for my diploma thesis and I enjoy it very much. I also enjoyed learning so much about Xorg.
So thanks for the fast and productive help. I guess I’m going to try openSUSE for gaming again with newer versions and after I got a desktop PC.
Hybrid GPU systems are a true pain
If you posted the error here someone could interpret them for you. You are probably missing something like maybe the kernel source???
I would if I could. Since reinstalling Gnome didn’t solve the problem with the 3D acceleration and I’m onto this whole problem for a week or two I didn’t fuss around any longer and installed Ubuntu right away. Then Ubuntu doesn’t use the btrfs format for the home partition so I had to format the whole disk and lost the log.
Btw I had both kernel sources, desktop- and default-sources installed as well as the kernel-devel package, the gcc compiler and so on. I really checked every usual dependency before I tried to install it. This error that appeared in the log was way more cryptic.
I can not even guess at what the problem is since no real error reported and you seem to be the only one that had it. Something odd with the hardware???
