X not starting after automatic update

Hello,
I’m new here, but have been using linux for a while as a user - I’m ok at playing around in the shell but not quite so hot if it comes to compling things!

I’ve got a Dell Latitude D620, with Intel 945GM on board video card and Sigmatel 9200 sound controller.

After a recent update, the laptop has stopped being able to boot X - the symptoms are that it loads grub2, then starts the boot process, pressing esc, it gets all the way to having started X, and then the cursor appears, and then nothing else happens.

After a short while, you can then press ctrl+alt+F1 and get a text login prompt.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

This is strange, but I don’t think this causes the problem.
Your monitor seems to send some invalid data.
Sometimes things like this can be fixed by just completely unplugging the monitor.

So AccountsService crashes on start. I think this causes your problem.
I’m not sure how to debug this though.

You could try to use another display manager, xdm f.e.
Just install the package “xdm” if not already installed, and in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager set the variable DISPLAYMANAGER to “xdm”.

Cheers - I’ve been working around this by forcing opensuse to start at runlevel 3, and then sudo -s and running gdm. This always starts.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Any chance the “video=1280x800” in grub2 is causing a problem ?

Alternatively, have you investigated booting with plymouth disabled?

I’ve tried disabling plymouth, but the boot process still hangs at the same point, so I don’t think it’s that. I’m in the middle of upgrading to 12.3 to see if that makes any difference. I’ll try looking at the video settings if I’ve still no joy.

Thanks for the reply, will let you know.

First impressions are that doing the online upgrade to 12.3 has resolved the issue, I’ve booted up and shut down several times this morning and it seems to be working normally now…

I worry about that “automatic update” you mentioned. I never allow
automatic updates, I prefer to decide myself. Maybe you had an
incompatible mix of packages; be careful with the repos you activate,
now that you got it working again
