X in ALT+CTRL+F8, not F7?

My main work machine is still on oS 13.2 x64 KDE4. Today there was a power failure and, after viewing the messages in ALT+CTRL+F10, I had to use ALT+CTRL+F8 to go back to X, i.e., the graphical terminal. I’ve noticed this before, but thought it was just the way oS 13.2 is set.

However yesterday in another 13.2 x64 KDE4 machine, a media center, I noticed that X is associated to ALT+CTRL+F7, not F8.

I’m curious about why the difference, but couldn’t find any references in a (quick) search.

Thanks,

And now, after turning the computer off (not rebooting) and on again, X is back to ALT+CTRL+F7. Go figure.

I have a vague recollection that the F8 change first appeared after 13.2 switched from sysinitV to systemd.

VT7 will be used by default for X, but if VT7 is already locked/in use by something, VT8 will be used instead, then VT9.

The most obvious thing that could lock VT7 is plymouth (which displays the splash screen on VT7), though normally kdm should tell plymouth to quit and then take over VT7. Maybe that didn’t work for some reason.

Ah, thanks Wolfi.
