X hangs and X crashes

Hello everyone,

New user here, just installed OpenSuse 11.3 a week ago.

I have been having a problem with the computer I’m using were it keeps freezing (mouse works, however nothing else does). Usually to get out of it I have to use REISUB signal for a forced reboot.

This only used to happen once in a while, but was still annoying. Tried a new video card, new motherboard… neither helped. Other Linux OS had the same issue, Windows XP works ok.

Yesterday after running a full update it got worse (first since I installed OpenSuse 11.3 64 last weekend). It appears that Firefox will crash X completely. Rendering got slower and Compiz disabled (not a big deal). Opera also crashes and just by resizing a window or scrolling down on gedit also do the same.

I found a few errors on my /var/log/messages log, looks like it’s related to the driver that I’m using (noveau).

I’m pretty good with Linux, but when it comes to X is the same as speaking another language to me! :-S

Any help, tips or links are more than welcome!

Try installing the latest ATI proprietary driver (you’ll find how in this forum).

If s/he uses noveau now it is most likely a nvidia card and not ati.

@victorbrca
Open yast -> software repositories and add the community repository for
nvidia
Install the nvidia proprietary driver -> restart X or reboot

a more detailed description is in the howto section
openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users

openSUSE 11.2 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.28 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
openSUSE 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Duo T9300@2.50GHz | Gnome 2.30 | Quadro
FX 3600M | 4GB Ram

I was browsing other posts and I fond this link (SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSE). Checked that my card was on the list and installed it with the 1-click. Rebooted and now X won’t even start.

according to his post, he has a Radeon HD 4200

That’s right, I’m using ‘Radeon HD 4200’. And I wonder why I had noveau installed as the video driver…

Do you have a nvidia integrated graphic chip on your motherboard + an ATI graphic card maybe ?
If tha’ts the case, you should disable onboard graphic in Bios setup anyway. It might not solve the problem you have with your ATI card however. But there’s no need to enable a graphic chip you’re not using.

Maybe because you wrote

> Tried a new video card, new motherboard… neither helped.

Was the new video card probably nvidia or an onboard card on the new
motherboard and left as a trace the noveau driver ?
Did you look at the howto I mentioned it contains information for ATI as
well?
But at this point I have to leave since I have not used ati for several
years now but nvidia.

If one installs multiple proprietary graphic drivers (for different hardware) in Linux, it can cause unpredictable problems. Especially in the case of an ATI proprietary driver (Catalyst), its best to remove an old version of that driver before installing a new ATI proprietary driver. If one had a nVidia card installed (with a proprietary nVidia graphic driver), removed it and put in an ATI card, one should first remove the proprietary nVidia graphic driver, before installing the proprietary ATI driver.

Hence IF you have been installing these graphic drivers via rpms, then IMHO you should remove any rpm with nvidia and remove any rpm with fglrx and only then try again to install the ATI graphic driver. You can check for such rpms by typing:

rpm -qa '*vidia*'
rpm -qa '*fglrx*'

I actually now remember that when I first installed OpenSuse I had a nvdia video card plugged in, but I removed it thinking it was the cause of the lock ups and also because it the built-in video was faster.

Checked the installed packages and I see two for ATI. I’ll try removing and re-installing.

i | x11-video-fglrxG02 | X Window display driver for the ATI graphics accelerators | package

So here’s what I tried:

1- Removed both packages
2- Rebooted
3- init 3
4- Installed ‘x11-video-fglrxG02’
5- Ran ‘aticonfig’
6- Rebooted, X would not start. Could not logon to ttys
7- Rebooted into recovery kernel (x works, but slow) and edited back xorg.conf
8- init 6
9- Now had access to ttys
10- Ran ‘Xorg -configure’
11- Could not startx (see Xorg.0.log)

Any ideas?? :-/

Clearly your Radeon HD 4200 is not identified by the proprietary driver that you tried. Maybe you should NOT be using x11-video-fglrxG02 but rather should be using another method to attempt to install the proprietary driver.

When I type “man radeon” and “man radeonhd” I see no evidence that those drivers support the Radeon HD4200 which I believe you have (or is your graphic card different ? ). When I checked the release notes of the Catalyst 10.8 driver, I note it supposedly supports the Radeon HD4200.

My recommendation is you try installing “the hardway” as opposed to using an rpm (which means building the rpm driver using the .run file provided by ATI).

Provided you did install the driver (read previous posts) ,

  • remove (or rename) /etc/X11/xorg.conf if any and run : aticonfig --initial
  • open /etc/X11/xorg.conf ( you can use vi … hmmm … I guess you won’t or maybe nano ?)
  • you should see a device section which looks more or less like that:
Section "Device"
   Identifier "RadeonHD 4200"
   BoardName "Radeon HD 4200 (RS880)"
   VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
   BusID "PC:1:5:0"
   Driver "fglrx"
   Option "DRI"
Endsection

Section "Screen"
    Device "RadeonHD 4200"
    ......
Endsection

aticonfig writes some generic Identifier name (and don’t use colors  ).
What matters is that the name used for identifier in the device section matchs the device name in the screen section. Driver must be “fglrx”. BusID might help (or not). According to your ouptut, the one I wrote should be right.

The monitor section is missing in my example but you should have one, as well as a “ServerLayout” section.

Normally you shouldn’t have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. aticonfig --initial should do the (minimal) job in most cases.

It doesn’t necessarely mean anything in this particular case … but I installed an ATI HD4290 last week and used the repo driver (10.6). X started with some kind of watermarked notice (hope you see what I mean) on the background, saying “unsupported hardware”. Otherwise it was OK. Of course, this notice was annoying and I installed 10.7 (as 10.8 wasn’t released).

[QUOTE=please_try_again;2214826]

Section "Device"
   Identifier "RadeonHD 4200"
   BoardName "Radeon HD 4200 (RS880)"
   VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
   BusID "PC:1:5:1"
   Driver "fglrx"
   Option "DRI"
Endsection

Section "Screen"
    Device "RadeonHD 4200"
    ......
Endsection

Should be 1:5:1. sorry.

If it might help, I just posted a script here :
some scripting to upgrade ATI Catalyst from 10.6 (repo) to 10.8 (run)

I’ll try some of the advices tonight when I get home. One thing I noticed is that on ATI’s page version 10.8 only supports up to Xorg v.7.5, while it looks like I’m using 8.0. Could that be the problem?

Btw, I’m only x server retarded… I do know my way around in the shell…

Thanks,
Vic.
