I am using openSUSE 11.3 (Kernel 2.6.34-12). I installed the GNOME Live CD version. On my P-III 1GHz computer with 512 mb ram, it runs faster than Windows XP. I use LXDE instead of GNOME.
I use Wvdial 1.60-67.1 to connect to the internet. It was working fine but now, I am having a problem.
A few seconds after Wvdial successfully connects to the internet, the CPU usage goes to 100 % and stays there, regardless of whether I am using the computer or not. I do not have any apps open other than Wvdial.
The hard disk does not hang but everything slows to a crawl, making the desktop almost unusable. If I open any app, it will take several seconds to open. After the browser loads, I am able to surf the web, no problem with that. But opening anything takes forever, to complete the task. Even clicking the ‘Logout’ button at the bottom right in the taskbar, takes very long to work.
There is NO option other then to restart the computer cuz everything slows down.
(If Wvdial is unable to connect to the internet, example when the modem is removed, I do not face this problem. Everything works fine.)
I have tried using Wvdial in both LXDE and GNOME. No luck. Now, I have to use Windows everytime for internet. I would love to keep using openSUSE for everthing and not have to boot into Win XP for access to the net or anything else.
I am a beginner with linux.
What do you guys recommend?
And is there any “graphical” dialer for LXDE & GNOME ?
Thanks!
I think I would load LXTask (in LXDE) or gnome-system-monitor (Gnome) to see which process is taking most of the CPU time in %. Surely just one running item would stand out in this application.
Thank You,
Task Manager and System Monitor are showing that everything is normal. Only the CPU usage is 100 %. LXtask and X are the only ones using the CPU but there usage is Normal and keeps fluctuating, 4%, 2%, 0% etc.
There is NO app that is using 100% of CPU !
I have tried re-installing Wvdial but that didnot help.
Maybe Wvdial is conflicting with something?

something must be using your CPU. try top instead of UI system monitors.
i often find that processes ksysguard (in my case) doesn’t show are in
fact using CPU/memory and do show up when using top (type “top” in a
terminal).

So you see, in a monitor program, total CPU=100%, yet no program is over 4%? In KDE I can press the CPU column and sort programs based on CPU % usage, thus causing high usage programs to come to the top. Have you tried this?
Thank You,
I tried typing “top” in the terminal. Same result. There is no process that is using 100% of the CPU. Only LXTask and X are using 2 to 4 %.
I have copied and pasted the CPU line from the terminal :
Cpu(s): 16.6%us, 3.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 0.0%id, 80.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
What is ‘wa’? It is using 80.5% of CPU !
I always click at the CPU usage column so that the processes that are using most of the CPU come to the top. This is how I am able to see that LXTerminal and X are the only ones that are using the CPU. Others show a usage of 0% after everything settles down.
Task Manager of LXDE shows that CPU usage is 100%.
GNOME System Monitor (in LXDE) shows that it is hovering around 50%.
The speed of my desktop shows that the usage is 100%.
