Wrong screen resolution?

deano, update: I followed your instructions but after pressing the ctrl/alt/backspace it took me to a black logon screen. I am lost when it gets here although I typed Root and then my password. The letters changed Red, I then tried init 5 and runlevel 5 but got nowhere.
I have googled the prob but am at this stage getting nowhere.

The 75 figure is the Vista refresh rate so I just typed it in , sorry.( I have very sensitive eyes, I notice the slightest flicker so I use 75 and get no flicker).

Prior to using your alterations I went into Yast and removed the nouveau drivers. I now get the Nvidia splash screen at boot up. This is what I used to get when I played with Puppy Linux.

cheers,
Eddie

deano, because I was somewhat stuck with the black screen I decided to look around the forum for a solution. I didn’t find a solution but did come across a guy with the same prob, who you also helped, he had upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and ended up with the same as me. He went onto say that he was going back to 11.2. So, I DL 11.2 and loaded it, I could tell from the first screen that all was well as the screen font was correct. I have installed the Nvidia drivers and am very satisfied. just wish 11.3 had gone as well as 11.2.
So, thankyou for your kind help as well as all the other tips from the forum members.
cheers,
Eddie.

Sounds like you were close. It may have been you just needed to add the required mode (Modes “1280x1024_75.00”) in 50-screen.conf which I didn’t mention to you.

Next time you get stuck with a black screen or similar, try booting up in ‘failsafe’ mode (from the grub menu). This will usually give you a graphical desktop environment with a basic framebuffer driver.

Anyway, 11.2 is working for you, so your’e good for now. You might consider trying 11.4 when it comes out.

Tip: Copy your working /etc/X11/xorg.conf to a memory stick as a backup. You may find this config file is useful when you try upgrading again. This approach has been used successfully by many users (upgrading to openSUSE 11.3 for example).

deano, I hope its OK to tack this on. I have downloaded 11.3 and installed it. Although 11.2 works perfectly I decided to try 11.3 only this time from the DVD just in case I wasn’t getting all with the Live cd.
I saved my 11.2 /etc/X11/xorg.conf to my Home file, I noticed when installing over a previous version that the Home file wasn’t formatted , so saved it to there.
11.3 is installed but again the max res is 1048x780 50Hz. I played around loading Nvidia and uninstalling Nouveau. After ctrl/alt/backspacing I ended up with 640x480 50Hz, no good, way too big.
I rebooted into failsafe and lo and behold perfect res 1280x1040 77Hz popped up. I then went into Root and tried to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf monitor file using the Nvidia-xconfig, but it won’t let me edit. Gives the Error: Unable to write to directory/etc/X11.
I am at the point now where I need help, I have googled it and looked around the forum but cannot come up with an answer.
I have tried using Kate to do the above but again it refuses to save.
HELP!
Eddie.
PS: I suppose I could just run in Safemode all the time???

When writing to system directories (or working with system files) you need to be root first. Open a console, then type

su -

Enter your root password when prompted. You mentioned that you saved xorg.conf to your home directory. You can copy this file to /etc/X11/, then restart the X-server

cp /home/fred/xorg.conf /etc/X11/

In the same way, nvidia-xconfig needs to be run with root privilges (but don’t run desktop as root ie don’t login as root)

For graphical editors (and other applications) requiring root privileges, you use the ‘kdesu’ command. For example

kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

deano, success, normal transmission has resumed!!!. The console CLI didn’t work so I resorted to the kdesu and CnP the file. It is showing 50Hz refresh rate whereas before it was 77 Hz although at this point I cannot detect any flicker.
I am now going to attempt installing Flash 64 bit by the same method.
I thanked you before but now i thank you a BIG time.
cheers,
Eddie.

Glad you got it sorted! (I’m sure you’ve learnt a lot from this issue).

You’re not wrong there!
