Hello,
after issuing “wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D wext /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf” in command mode, wpa_supplicant hangs; last echo is
“CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to <router address> completed (auth) [id=0 id_str=]”.
Tho mention is that I run opensuse 11.3, and that at W_S startup, I see the message
“ioct[SIO_CSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument” two times.
Any idea?
Best regards,

Hello caf4926,
the device is Atheros AR928X.

Are you telling us that you only have issues with WPA
or is there issues even without security?
HCL:Network (Wireless) - openSUSE
Hello caf4926,
I believe that the issues are with WPA, since the device connects. However, I do not see the significance of the “ioct[SIO_CSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument”
message, as my wpa_supplicant.conf-file is pretty standard:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/epa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
network={
ssid=
pairwise=TKIP
group=TKIP
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk=
proto=WPA
}
Thanks for your efforts so far!
J C Anker
Are you then telling us that it connects correctly with no security?
Just so we are clear on this
Sorry, I was unclear, the ssid and psk are set, it is connecting WITH security!

Hello caf4926,
I have issued a bug-report at bugzilla (#397).
Thanks for your efforts and best regards,

Is there a particular reason that you are using ifup rather than NetworkManager?
With recent versions of wpa_supplicant, NetworkManager, and kernel drivers, the
D-bus interface to the supplicant is employed. That might make a difference.
Reason(s):
Need a connection to get NetworkManager working. Need a connection to get zypper working. Almost have a connection with wpa_supplicant (ref previous posts).
As far as I know, I am not trying using ifup.

J C Anker
Hello pistazienfresser,
see Bug 397 – wpa_supplicant Connects, then Hangs / opensuse 11.3 (nothing new there, simply a reference to this thread).

Hi J C,
thanks for the link. I thought there where a half of the digits missing in the number…:shame:
But as you have written is really Bug #397 - on the bugzilla of Jouni Malinen, the (main) developer of wpa_supplicant / on the wpa_supplicant bugzilla / ‘upstream’.
I am not very experienced nor have I ever been something even close to a software developer but I would doubt that it is a good idea to give in the report nearly not any data - the developer would even have to visit this forum to know that version of software / distribution you are using…
I am here really in the area of guessing around but maybe something like explained in the (a bit old?) wiki article SDB:Tracking down wireless problems - openSUSE under the paragraph wpa_supplicant would be able to produce a bit more data?
Regards
puzzled pistazienfresser
(= Martin)
Hello pistazienfresser (Martin),
two things:
I did not want to bombard JM with a massive amount of data, I asked him for exactly what he needed (I have been developing software and would prefer to inquire for nothing more and nothing less than I need).
The article you are referring to I have read more than 10 times (without missing too much, I suppose). The problem is that wpa_supplicant establishes the connection and then hangs (ctrl-break after some 45 minutes on one occation). googling wpa_supplicant indicates that there are problems “now and then”.
Best regards,
J C Anker (Jan Christian)

NetworkManager makes the connection, and it does not use the outdated wext
interface to wpa_supplicant. I don’t know if that is the reason for the hang,
but it looks suspicious.
Hello Martin,
I am giving up on finding a solution to my problems. Let me clearly express that this is not due to lacking help from the forum, the attempts from everyone to find a solution are greately appreciated. At the moment, I am backing up the whole computer to be able to reinstall openSuSE “without too much fear”.
Summing up / drawing conclusions:
- I think some essential files have been lost during an unsuccesful attempt on installing the gcc FORTRAN compiler.
- wpa_supplicant seems to be a candidate for improvements.
- Yast needs to have access to the net to recover lost system files.
- NetworkManager can not be run in command mode.
- I have learnt a lot about linux during the exercise.
- I should have opted for a reinstall of the system as soon as the problems materialized (from the CD).
- This forum is great!
Thanks and best regards,
Jan Christian
