I seem to see a misunderstanding when it comes to what is possible, let alone what is easiest to fix by using tools such as gparted, I’m wondering, if I made a basic guide outlining how to use a liveCD with gparted to easily some of the partitioning problems often considered as " there is a better way" or “your best option is to reinstall”
would it be considered useful, Partitioning tools have not stood still for the last 20 years.
loving volunteers to plow into the future!
but, are you asking if it is ok to update, rewrite or begin anew on:
and/or
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Basics_of_partitions,_filesystems,_mount_points
and/or
the Novell Doc found by go to
http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse112/book_opensuse_startup/?page=/documentation/opensuse112/book_opensuse_startup/data/book_opensuse_startup.html
then, on the left, in the navigation area, click to expand
“Installation and Setup”, then expand “Installation with YaST” then
click on “Suggested Partitioning”
there are probably several more (for sure there are many threads
findable in forums.opensuse.org), but i didn’t search for those, yet…

DenverD, it’s none of the above, an example, someone has already installed linux, They have had it installed for some time, they now want to make changes to there original partitioning setup, this is simple to do, however it can be portrayed as rather complex ( this seems to happen ).
i was thinking you wanted to re-do existing stuff…since that is not
what you wanna to: you don’t need ‘approval’ to start fresh, on a new
project…
i think i’d rather see it in the wiki than in a forum how-to, but that
is just me (i’d rather see ALL how-tos on the wiki, but . . .)

@dvhenry
I for one would be very pleased to see a good tut on this subj, if only for selfish reasons, as I have two machines whose partitioning needs a good spring clean and tidy. I was planning asking for help in a direct question on the forum. If you wanted I could work with you, as then you would be able more clearly to see through the eyes of a true idiot like me, and would therefore know what info is needed…
@DenverD If the tut is good (sort of “beta” test on the forum) then fire it up to the WIKI, that way we have the best of both worlds?

works fine for me, but it seems like once it is in the forum’s how-to
i never really ‘graduates’ into the wiki SDB section…
don’t know why that is the case…
of course, i am one of the very few around here massively perplexed by
the duality of our “Community”…we don’t have a Community, we have
two which (mostly) don’t talk to each other…
one part of the ‘Community’ uses (mostly) these fora as their primary
(almost single) source of info/help, and the other part uses the wiki,
IRC, mail lists, blogs and (surprise!) published documentation…
seldom do the two meet…which is a shame…

I would think it would be useful.
When getting my new “test box” ready I wanted to blow away the partitions on the SATA drive I was reusing. I tried a version of Pmagic I had laying around and it failed to boot after taking an inordinate amount to load so I used a openSUSE Live KDE disk. I used the partition tool in YAST to delete the old partitions and set the new ones.
When I a instal of 11.3 all went smoothly. I have over 300 gigs of un-partitioned space waiting for openSUSE 11.4 milestone 4 and space for testing Mageia if they ever get a release out.
After saying all that I don’t use the Wiki. I find it difficult to use. My brain doesn’t search like most wikis are laid out. I don’t do so well searching the forum either though. I usually search before I post.
