Wordfast Pro on OpenSuse 11.4

Hi,

Has anybody installed Wordfast Pro on OpenSuse 11.4? I downloaded the tar ball with the precompiled executable. Upon running I get the following error:

This issue was solved on the ubuntu forums by installing a package called ia32-sun-java-bin, but it doesn’t exist for OpenSuse.

Best,
Z.

Can you please give the relevant info about your system? 32bit or x86_64 ?

What flavour of java is installed? java-sun or openjdk?

Did you try java-binfmt-misc ?

As a registered customer, why not ask the Wordfast hotline?

(vodoo mumbling to himself: as far as I can see from the net WFP is not really supporting 64-bit Linux)

this does not seem like an openSUSE problem to me, i think you should
ask the seller of Wordfast Pro to support you…

i’ve just been to the site and see they have a knowledge base…i’d
check there and in their forum…

none of the above is meant to mean that you can’t hang out here just in
case someone has already figured out what to do (but, don’t you think
the Wordfast folks should have already done that? i mean, on this page
http://www.wordfast.com/support_platforms.html they list SUSE as a
supported platform, so let them support!

I am running OpenSuse 11.4 64-bit, with sun java 6.

I did contact the hotline a couple of days ago and apparently they do not support 64-bit Linux. Not so hot!

There is also nothing about SUSE on the knowledge base. Not even a single Linux thread.

Yes Wordfast Pro is essentially a 32-bit application. The SUSE platform support refers to Wordfast Classic, a completely different product, running on MS Word through Crossover. They also mention KDE2 in there!!!? I am guessing OpenSuse 10.x or even earlier? Wouldn’t help anyway.

The Ubuntu hack was done through the community, without any help from Wordfast. I am not an expert on Java but maybe someone can suggest a workaround for OpenSuse.

Is the java-binfmt-misc package capable of handling 32-bit apps on 64-bit OS?

I guess I understand now why Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distro. Unusual problems actually get solved there in true community spirit.

This is clearly not to gonna get solved with this community, but thanks for the lecture on how to use the forums… after 7 lousy years of suse.

do as you wish…

but, recognize that you are (as i said before) welcome to hang out
here and see if another Wordfast Pro user happens by and can help you!

remember, your opening question was “Has anybody installed Wordfast Pro
on OpenSuse 11.4?” and apparently the answer to that question, so far,
is “No.”

so, wait some more…maybe someone happens by today who has tried your
application before and can say: “All you have to do is blah blah . . .”
or maybe that happens in a year or two–in the mean time i don’t know
what to do to help you…

but if you don’t want to wait, then i guess it is ok to get mad that no
one who is not a user of Wordfast Pro has gone to the trouble of
purchasing a license so it would be possible to install and figure out
what is wrong with your system!!

but, you already got your answer: “I did contact the hotline a couple of
days ago and apparently they do not support 64-bit Linux.” So, install
openSUSE 32 bit (you could do that into a VM), or find a different,
competing application which will run in 64!

or how about this: you talk the the Wordfast Pro folks into giving an
openSUSE developer a free copy of the licensed program and maybe pay
him/her a few hours wages to figure out how to get their program to run
in your (and all) 64 bit Linux…how about that??

so, after “seven lousy years”, it is your move to make (wait, load 32,
switch apps, get mad and leave, etc)…but you earn nothing by trying
to discredit the community in the way you did in your post just because
no Wordfast Pro user happens by in three days!

look: you wrote “This issue was solved on the ubuntu forums by
installing a package called ia32-sun-java-bin, but it doesn’t exist for
OpenSuse.” so, do a good backup and try installing that package on
your openSUSE, maybe it works, maybe not…NONE of us can try it to
find out for you t it works or not, because NONE of us (that have come
by this thread, so far) have a licensed program to see it if works!
think about it!

@zuze11

Why don’t you use 32-bit Linux?

There is no need to use 32-bit linux. The whole point of the ia32-sun-java-bin package is to make it possible to run such a 32-bit software on a 64-bit architecture. I don’t know if you agree, but it seems a bit exaggerated to have to install a full blown 32-bit distro just to run a couple of 32-bit apps. It shouldn’t have to be like this. The ia32-sun-java-bin package is available with sun-java on Ubuntu but not Opensuse. Go figure!

Right now I am checking Kubuntu for reasons not just related to this issue. I’ve been toying with the idea of switching from OpenSuse to Kubuntu/Debian for a while now. It seems like the better distro with a much larger and more helpful community, and better adapted for what I do and the hardware I use.

@DenverD
Ironically, your replies are reminiscent of the ivory tower attitude of earlier SuSe 7.x tech support back in 2002 or so: a lot of fancy words, but no solution… even when you pay! Been there, done that!

Having been on both sides of the community I don’t see appreciable differences between the commercial experience and the opensource one (with the notable exception of one moderator on this forum who went out of his way. Thank you again! But then again, it was exceptional). At the end of the day you have to go with what works. That’s the bottom line.
