Won't shut down

If I boot up and immediately shut down it works but, after using the computer through the day and go to shut down it hangs. I can move the mouse around but that’s it; keyboard frozen can’t Ctrl Shift Backspace; just get a beep. I have to hardware shutdown. The only thing I’ve done is: I have Sudo configured to nopassword. I went into Yast / Sudo and noticed another name on the Nopassword list. My name was also there so I deleted the line with the other name. I guess I pasted the command with this other name by mistake when I configured sudo. I thought that may have been the problem but, if so why does it shut down after a fresh boot up.

With opensuse 11 a change was made so Ctrl+Alt+Backspace beeps once to
warn you about killing the GUI and if you do it a second time within (I
think) two seconds it will actually do what you expect it to.

I doubt sudo is related. The best thing to probably do is watch ‘top’
while shutting down after a day to see if anything is busy. Also check
out your system’s various log files. Does it work better if you log out
of the GUI manually first and THEN shutdown? Are you able to change to
runlevel 3 (init 3) and then shutdown? If you leave your box up for a
day with no interaction does it shutdown properly?

Good luck.

That worked but, I think the interval allowed is a lot less than two seconds. I tried several times and I was able to log off if I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace immediately following the first time. Thanks I’ll try the other stuff you suggest.

I have discovered but, not solved the reason Suse won’t shut down. It’s VLC hanging up keeping its’ hooks in there somehow. I don’t know how to tackle the fix though; anyone???
