WHY? I just wanted to uninstall the nVidia 3rd party driver and lost my years old perfect linux install and all my work. Rescue disc HAS NO instructions on a “safe mode” boot. Please someone just leave a solution, I’m about ready to give up on linux too, and just have a god****ed iphone like every other nut. At least I can smash those on the ground and not lose anything. Anyone?>:(
Well having no ideas what or how you actually removed the packages it may be you wiped all the fall back nvidia drivers like nouveau and nv.
So did you try selecting advanced mode at the boot and selecting rescue mode? That will use generic drivers
BTW just because the machine won’t boot does not mean you have lost anything. Your data is still there.
I DID do the safe/rescue mode boot and such, but still had my WSOD. I DID manage to recover, here’s how:
I booted the install disc and did the upgrade install, let it run and when I booted it back, I STILL had the WSOD. SOOOOOO, I then did a FULL install but I DID NOT format or re-partition the linux area of the disc(it has three OS’ on it-in a tri-boot config), and VOILA!
Everything is still there, no data loss, EVEN the favicons in Firefox were still there. Then I had to change all the repos back to packman repos and do >180 updates for my multi-media playback, that was the only loss, of course.
Bottom line, it worked, nouveau was there as I had full color display upon the first recovered startup, you’ll just lose codecs until switching to packman repos.
Now I’m back to a linux only guy since slackware 1.0, thanks for the reply, I LOVE this community, let’s elect John McAfee for president!!!
Thank you gogalthorp!
